I opened my ACD pump.

After driving around with my 3 ACD lights coming on during warm weather, I finally decide to replace it with a used one yesterday. I've oringinally plan to have it rebuilt but my friend had a pump he was about to throw away from his wrecked IX. It was smashed up pretty bad because the car was hit on that side. So I took parts from mine and add to it. After installing it no more 3 lights. But I was curious see what my pump like on the inside before I toss it aside and I was shocked. I could not believe that a pump with only 33k could be this corroded. And when compared to my friends pump, which was from Florida, it was night and day. Even my brackets was badly rusted when compared to his brackets. So these pumps are not going to last long in snow, know I see why some evo owners park their cars in the winter.

My pump inside.

Comparison with other pump.

Nice post there Sir

I work in an industry that deals w/the effects of corrosion damage on vehicles.

Most of the corrosion is accelerated by the use of all the deicing chemicals. The magnesium & calcium chlorides are very damaging to aluminum & electrical components

EDIT: After a run in the snow, one should give the EVO a full water wash

Wow that's crazy corroded... I live in Wisconsin and just bought my Evo a little while back, and I'm going to be driving mine in the winter for now. Not looking forward to driving a 24k mile mint Evo i the snow! I never even drove my Civic in the snow...

I'm thinking of taking mines off again and put some silicone around the joints. Hope it will slow the corrosion down.

I don't get it. What runs through this pump is ATF. Take any automatic transmission apart and there is no corrosion. So, why in this pump???? What is different??? If some smart person can figure this out then maybe we can prevent the problem.

Yeah what he said /\/\ this should not be happening ATF will NOT corrode the aluminum....Im guessing electrolysis dissimilar metals and a potential from ground. someone on the ACD pump rebuild threads was going to try a stainless steel plate for the pump..wonder if that would solve the issue or make it worse ?

Wonder if this happens in Florida weather to a car that has been hit in the front and the grounds are bad?

Maybe we make a kit to ground the pump nicely to the block ?

Well the pump i replace it was from fl and just by comparing the joints i could see the difference. My joints was all corroded over, while the one from fl I didn't see any oxidation on the outside joints. I didnt open the pump because i didnt want to ruin the seal. But i think these pumps will eventually fail, mitsu should at least give one replacement free of chg. yea right, wishful thinking. But foreal thou, i see sony was replacing customers out of warranty tvs that had an optical block problem(aka green blob). They replaced my 5 year old tv for free and mitsubishi wouldn't replace my pump because it was out of warranty by 3 days. I love my car and probably going keep it forever, but i will never buy another mitsu. ImJustsaying.

it is a combination of water and salt that corrodes the pump + the fact that it is really badly sealed..

If you rebuild the pump, just use lots of grease on all the bolts, and cover all joints in silicone sealant.. For valves use heavy grease around them..

The hydraulic valves are more of a problem... we have new parts for the pump, but not for the valves..
