Exedy Triple Normally Loud?
Exedy Triple Normally Loud?
Hey Guys,
I just upgraded my Exedy twin to an Exedy Triple. The throw-out bearing was not replaced because it had extremely low-mileage and made zero noise. However, when I press the clutch pedal in, there is a lot of noise coming from the clutch. As soon as I take my foot off the clutch it goes away.
The clutch seems to be engaging and disengaging just fine. Also, when I put it together, I made sure the clutch disks were facing the correct direction (toward the transmission where notated). Did I miss something else other than that? Should they stack in a special order or rotation? ...or is facing the transmission where notated the only thing?
Thanks!

With my twin there was a step where you index the discs. If I'm not mistaken you stagger the gap/space between the friction pads. Not to sure about the triple. Have you contacted Exedy? They have fantastic product support!
the noise aka chatter is normal for all muti plate clutches i have not seen a twin or tripple yet that does not make noise ct evo do you have any pictures of your clutch discs i just wanted to make sure you had got the newer version.

I don't have a pic, but I just ordered the kit from STM about 1-2 months ago, so I would guess it's the "newer version".
I can say that when I put it together, I faced the Exedy logo towards the transmission, but I don't recall looking for blue paint marks and lining those up (from what I've read on other forums). Does anyone know if there are blue marks that need to be aligned on our cars, or just make sure the Exedy logo is facing towards the transmission per Exedy?

I also just upgraded my twin to a triple and all of the noises you are hearing are normal. On decel it sounds like something is coming apart. As long as the disc are installed as marked you should be fine. I liked my twin hd much better thats for sure.
the triple is not noisy. ITS VERY NOISY
the twin is very quiet by comparison
the triple gets even more noisy with use. sounds like a broken car before the engine even fires. anacceptable for a daily driver by my standards.

OK. Glad I'm not the only one!
Just to be sure though - Other than facing the Exedy logo towards the transmission and installing the discs/plates in the correct order, as well as torquing everything to spec; am I missing anything?
I read on a Supra forum that there is blue marks on all of the discs to notate which way you stager them... Is this the case for my Evo and I missed that?
Thanks!

Excellent, glad to know I didn't screw it up. I didn't think I would as I am always very careful about doing things right. I was just surprised at how incredibly loud the clutch is now in comparison to the twin I had before. You guys get almost a chirping/dull whine too coming out from a stop at low RPM?
I just picked up my car that has a tripple in it, you can hear it but i don't think it's too bad. Its much louder if you are in a garage or next to a wall or something like that. Mine sometimes will squeak when engaging the clutch from a stop sign. As fas as i can tell this is all normal. To me the minor noise is worth it to pull off flawless NLTS 1-4 gear with 500 whp :-D
