Question restacked plates - clunking noise from diff

installed lsd on my IV. it was oem unit from jdm evo and when dissasembled the diff, plates were in correct way as in manual (plate/disc/plate/disc/plate) but when assembling back I mixed up the sequence which plate/disc where after which on each side (maby mixed up sides as well)

installed the diff and there's hell of clunking noise when turning

I know it's common when rearranging plates but how do you think will the clunking sound go away after some period when discs brake in on their new surfaces ? because as I know all jdm evos have them in correct way and no clunking sound at all

p.s. I know the pinned thread above about this subject but I think not much people look in there any more. so decided to open new thread about my question

What fluid are you using? Why did you take it apart in the first place? Did you remove the JDM LSD from your car or were you replacing your diff with the JDM unit?

I replaced AYC with LSD from jdm car and opened diff to check in what order the plates were in it.
the fluid I use is Motul Gear300 75w-90

Had similar issues with rear diff plate restack, a lot of folks here have. Long story short--tried lots of fluids, and ended up back with OEM Diaqueen and that was the quietest. Other then that the diff will "crunch" when turning.

1/2 bottle of GM LSD fluid should take care of the problem.

wrong fluid... for mechanical LSD you need something like motul 90 PA

also, clunking noise is normal for mechanical LSD with preload.. (which is waht you really need in the rear diff... I talked to some rally car builders and they swear that normal RS rear diff is identical to the Ralliart one, only difference being properly stacked plates and preload on the diff..

just double checked and you are right, lsd isn't in the list of Gear300's specs, it's only listed for 90PA and GearCompetition 75w-140. difference between them is, first is mineral and the second synthetic

it's my daily driver and this noise is bit annoying

Other people have had the same problem when going with certain lubricants, even without restacking the plates. Diaqueen was the best solution.

well, more preload will give you more clunking...

Don't fix it the easy way for $6.50 and be done with it in 10 minutes.

Half of that little bottle its more than enough. Did it on many cars that clunked after replacing lsd clutches. Clunk usually goes away after 2-3 days of driving. Smell of it is disguisting make sure u wont spill any.

changed existing oil to Motul GearCompetition 75w-140, after 2-3 days of driving clunking noise dicreased significantly, don't know due to oil, or due to plates broke in.

there are still ocassional noises especially when parking or low speed sharp turns and also feel the tension on steering wheel and preload on rear inner wheel. my question is, do that friction modifier fluids affect the performance of lsd ? meaning, if they dicrease friction will the car still well responsive on power oversteer ?

and which one to get, GM or the one evo9dud put the link above

cheers guys, your opinion is greatly appritiated

The gm and ford lsd fluid works! I use diaqueen fluid with less than 1/2 bottle of the gm lsd oil. Diff stays tight, oversteer not an issue! The only times mine makes noise is when i let the car sit for few week. It will chatter a bit until i drive it a while then it goes away.

Before you start out, make a couple of figure 8's in the parking lot.
