Forward facing turbo questions!

Hey guys, I've done the search but couldn't find the answer i was looking for...

dumb question, but
1. why are forward facing turbos used?

2. I currently live in beijing, roads arent exactly you call "smooth", filled with little rocks here and there... as long as there is a filter on the turbo, will it be okay?

3. can A/C still be retained?

thanks and any input will be greatly appreciated!

-Brendon

1. They look "cool" and they access cooler air through the front grill vs. hot air from under the hood.

2. Yes if you have a filter you should be ok. Some of the kits though will not fit a filter or make it extremely difficult to find one that will fit.

3. Yes but it will require some modifications to work.

I have a question of my own: Even with a filter on, how bad will it be to drive the car in rain? I live in WA and it rains 364 days out of the year lol

Probably pretty bad, which is why I don't have a forward facing turbo setup. Living in the middle of tornado ally we have thunderstorms that can just pop up out of no where very quickly. If I were caught in the rain with a forward facing turbo setup I imagine I wouldn't be going anywhere until everything was dry.

buschur racings front facing turbo kit is ideal , it allows you to fit a filter and a block off screen so you can't suck water in , presuming you have an evo8 front bumper ..

They get more fresh oxygen for combustion. Also allows vehicle speed to aide that ingestion.

i'd have to see some non-biased back-to-backs to see how much improvement.i don't see the gains being off the charts, and probably not even noticeable until up to a pretty high speed.

they do look cool though.

cant really gauge the benefits when the car is stationary.

I've driven in torrential downpour and its been fine.

I might have to disagree with this.. Don't get me wrong, they look hardcore but I have a thought. Maybe it's moot, I dunno.. The turbo is only going to work as hard as the exhaust that spins it.. I can understand the ram air theory and ram air is great for a N/A engine however.. Ram air directly into a turbo, I'm not so sure. The turbo shaft spins VERY VERY high rpm and moves air pretty damn fast. Mounted sideways, it just does it's thing normally.. Now turn the inlet FF and throw 100-150 mph wind resistance into that impeller I almost want to say that will make the turbo work harder then it would be sideways mounted.. It gets deeper... The turbo shaft spins clockwise looking into the inlet, Yes? Now mount that turbo on a slight diagonal with the inlet pointing slightly towards the front right side of the car.
Now when you are driving, that turbo shaft/impeller is spun against the force of the wind and the resistance just got multiplied..
This is either a very valid point or I'm gonna get LOL'd... Have at it...

i agree with this part.

true, guess you would have to do back to back 1/4 mile runs after swapping turbo kits,to find out.yes,it looks cool, but yes you could screw yourself bad with a rock chip or rainstorm.performance wise,i honestly can't see it making a huge difference.
