Evo 5 sudden stall problems?
Hey guys,
been having this issue for a while now but its on and off and i cant replicate the issue by doing anything in particular.
While driving and also when just sitting and idling, the car will suddenly stall, for no reason at all it appears. At first i thought it could be a TPS issue (ie. signal dropping out), but i dont get any voltage drops outs from that when the engine dies.
I have noticed that when the engine cuts out, it kills all spark (feels like someone is slamming on the brakes when your doing 60kph), and that the RPM drop to 0 even though the wheels are still forcing the engine to turn over. Should the RPM dial still show the actual rpm, if the engine dies like that?
another possible cause i thought of, was the crank angle sensor, although i really hope not!
The problem is really annoying as i cant pin down whats causing it. When driving, the engine seems to cut out for a half second, then come back fine again, but then cut out again, then come back once more and then wont cause me a problem for the rest of the trip. On other occasions i wont have the issue for a week or more, but then it comes back several times a day.
Maybe a dodgy cable for a sensor?
Sorry for the essay but any help would be great!

Might be worth trying a crank sensor or cam sensor as its one of them that controlls the sparking i think. My gut feeling says Crank sensor but if you can borrow a cam sensor thats worth a try for sure as its a 2 minite job to change.
i would also say crank sensor. the crank sensor is what tells the ecu where the pistons are and when to spark so do voltage drops on the crank sensor and check the resistance in the sensor as well to see if it is bad or not GL.
As stupid as this may sound I had a similar issue could never pin point what it was. Even went for random drives logged the car through Evoscan.
I changed cam sensor with a used one and it still did it. Didn't change the crank sensor. But in the end it was a grounding issue went over the ground points and changed my battery terminals and has been good ever since.

yeah have a bad feeling that its the crank angle sensor.. if it wasnt such a pain to get to, it wouldnt worry me so much. bad thing is, i think it may be the sensors cable thats the issue, maybe its been pinched by the lower timing belt cover when the timing belt was changed a little while back.
just bought EvoScan and the cable so i can do some logging to see what the cause is. 90% sure its the crank angle sensor =( . TPS has been replaced anyway (had a random hole in it??), think it was worn anyway, much sharper response to throttle movements now.
Anyone know of a way to access the crank angle sensor, without having to go through the whole timing belt replacement procedure? hoping to avoid a few hours of pain lol

Had a quick look at the grounding cable/s (is there more than one?) seems secure and clean.
Started the engine, then wend jiggling cables under the bonnet to try and get it to stall. no luck.
