hta 71 OR hta 73
Buy the $200 IX turbo, send it in for 71Hta($750) as a core ($100) and you save $550 for a new 71HTA. This is the most cost effective upgrade if you have a IX turbo laying around. You don't need the fp oil line,84mm cover, or upgraded WG(Helps hold more boost, but isnt required). I made 470/460 on a MD with a basic 71Hta on a built 2.0 @34psi/E85. Sold this turbo to a buddy with a basic mods that made around 410@30psi/E85 on the same MD dyno.
The old green is better then the 71 and the 73hta .... Im makin 410hp and 395tq on pump and making 515hp and 486tq on the old green best fp turbo love it no regrets i wouldnt upgrade it to the new greens ... Just my opinion
Thanks to Sparky for meeting up with me and giving his input on the turbosmart WGA. He's a cool guy.
So as some of you know I opted for the hta 71 upgrade for it's spool charectoristics. I love driving the canyons of N. Cal and lag is a killer up here. The turbo came on Monday and upon opening the box I was very impressed. I cannot even tell that they reused any of the turbo I sent them. The entire thing looks brand new. It looks like they completely resurfaced/coated my hotside free of charge. So far I am very happy with my purchase. I will be installing the turbo and going into FFTEC for 91/e85 tune next friday. Thanks for everyone's input I will repay you with some results/review of this turbo.

I really can't make a fair and unbiased comparison that would be of any value to you. I would have liked to install the Turbosmart unit on hermin's turbo and road test the car, adjust preload, check for abnormal boost control issues(spikes, creep, taper, and etc.), but that was not in the cards as hermin had not yet received his 71 HTA from FP when I rode in his car.
I only saw the Turbosmart unit in its box. It appears to be well made. They ship it with two different rate springs(17# & 25#), I think. Unlike the FP units, it is of modular assembly. The cannister I imagine is universal and what changes is a different mounting bracket and actuator rod for each different application.
The cannister's mounting bracket which bolts to the comp housing is 16G specific. There must be different interchangeable actuator rods for each brand of turbo as well. So, you receive from Turbosmart: 1) a universal canister, with two halves fastened by hex screws. 2) An interchangeable rod specific to each make of turbo, and, 3) a pair of interchangeable springs(17 & 25).
Like I said though, we never got a chance to test it. I like the FP units as everyone knows. If pressed I would go with FP or MAP myself if that helps.

As far as the WGA I would not recommend it to any one. It doesn't fit quite right. I will have to fab the mounting bracket it came with to make it work. Also their customer service is sub-par. I called and inquired about spring rates, adjusting preload etc. and they just said "it comes pre-loaded." What the hell is that supposed to mean? Anyway, I wish MAP just sent me the map 25 psi unit that I had asked for. Thanks for being a good sport Sparky I hope to see you again soon.
I've installed 5 Turbosmart billet gates.
All fitted onto a several different turbo's without any dramas.
I set the pre-load on each gate the same, half an eyelet, then regulate the pressure via different springs.
The are also completely servicable due to the replaceable springs, diaphragm etc.

If you're going to do it, now is the time. The two reasons to do it now are that it is winter so people will be selling their 9 turbo's for cheap, and fp is having the $500 upgrade special right now. Let's do some canyon / redwood runs when I start winter break (3.5 weeks). ps I used to drive an 06 tacoma and LOVED it
