Timing belt let go what now?
Timing belt let go what now?
Posting for a buddy...
Hey guys, my buddy bought a Evo 9 SSL with 50,000 Miles 2 weeks ago, today going for a drive he wanted to boost it because noticed the boost was on the low side boosting only 0.5 Bar its all stock. he pulled it up to 6K Rpm then slowly let off the throttle and noticed it was losing power then the car finally just stalled, managed to get it pulled over, cranked it over but was not starting, took off the timing belt cover and see that the cam gears do not move when trying to crank it then found piece of the timing belt in the cam gear.
I'm guessing it sheered some teeth, now I'm wondering, is it okay to just replace the timing belt or will it need a whole new head (bent valves).
Any advice would be great thanks guys.
And would anyone know why it would only be boosting 0.5 Bar - Thank you.

The motor is an interference type, so you won't be able to just put a belt on and go. Your gonna need to remove the head for an inspection. If your lucky it will only be valves needing replacement. But you won't know till you get in there.
If you want to see if you have any valves bent, perform a leak down test after you have installed a new belt. Turn the motor over by hand and make sure each cylinder holds pressure.
As for your boost level problem, that could be tested by pressure testing the intake system. See if any vacuum lines have come loose, especially the ones on the egr valve under the intake manifold, any cracked couplers. spray each joint down with soapy water if you think there is a leak.

Dont cheap out on slapping a belt on and calling it a day. Deff take the head off, inspect the valves, and deff look at the pistons. If you got lucky you might just need to slap a new headgasket on along with valves new timing belt your back on your way! Good Luck keep up updated
