So my mechanic unfortunately had to drop the rack and pinion to bring down my tranny. My tire alignment is perfect and untouched just now that my steering wheel is not centered, I noted under the steering column there is a socket looking thing that goes over the splined bar that goes to that rack and pinion. That has a pressure clip that you can remove and probably adjust the steering wheel yourself. Is that easier then it sounds?

 

You can, but I would take it back to the mechanic and have him do it. You paid for a job, and the wheel was straight when you took it in. He should fix it.

 

its a 10mm bolt that loosens the "neck" and then you can slide the shaft up

 

Where would that bolt be?

 

At the bottom of the steering column. Where it meets the rack assembly. You can remove it, lift the yoke fitting off of the rack splines and move it left or right one spline at a time until the wheel is straight. Only move the column side. Be sure to have your car pointing straight ahead when you do it.

 

yep, you have to pop off the black cover kinda behind the gas pedal

 

I don't think so if your working it by the steering column

 

behind this cover is where the steering column meets the steering rack. You have to take the cover off to access that bolt. Loosen the bolt and then you can maneuver the steering column. I had to do this when I dropped my subframe for the tranny install. My steering wheel before was slight crooked, and now it's perfectly level.

edit: you can see the spline section on the rack in this picture. This part protrudes into the cabin and that is what the steering column slides on to.

I Managed to align the steering wheel perfectly. I removed the 12mm bolt but its impossible to lift it up and turn it without removing that pressure clamp. I had to remove the pressure clamp. Then when it was time to slide the pressure clamp back in place, I took 30 minutes and 3 different pliers later and no way in hell did it want to pop back in. I had to rip it off and replace it with a worm gear clamp.
