Is there a QUIETER muffler for the Buschur 3
Is there a QUIETER muffler for the BR 3" TB?
Well, I just had a fun weekend installing my Buschur Stage 3 components. I got everything done except for the cams. I need to install those while I send in my ECU for a reflash.
Everything went well until I went for a run to the grocery store after I got the exhaust fitted. On the way back from the store I was "exploring" the new noises eminating from the hood, mainly the mad sound the turbo makes as it spools under WOT. Just as I was signalling to pull into my neighborhood the "blue disco lightshow" appeared in my rear view mirror. To make a long story short, after a song and dance from the officer about how I should slow it down, he writes me up for my exhaust!
WTF! I bought the quiet Magnaflow muffler! (EDIT: With a cat too!)
Well, he attempted to write me up for my exhaust but instead he wrote me up under the wrong section of code, citing me for "unapproved equipment" which in Virginia deals with accessory lighting.
I think what he wanted to write me up under was this:
Code of Virginia § 46.2-1049. Exhaust system in good working order.
No person shall drive and no owner of a motor vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. An exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or unusual noise if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory equipment exhaust system of private passenger motor vehicles or trucks of standard make.
The term "exhaust system," as used in this section, means all the parts of a motor vehicle through which the exhaust passes after leaving the engine block.
Chambered pipes are not an effective muffling device to prevent excessive or unusual noise.
(Code 1950, § 46-305; 1952, c. 455; 1956, c. 651; 1958, c. 541, § 46.1-301; 1960, c. 120; 1970, c. 266; 1972, c. 66; 1989, c. 727.)
What are my alternatives? I'm willing to sacrafice 5 to 10WHP and a bit more weight in order to be a little more stealthy. I can always throw on a freer flowing muffler for track days.
My S4 had a 3" G2 exhaust from Neuspeed. I never got attention while running with that exhaust unless I let it rip at WOT but that exhaust had two mufflers in series. Am I going to have to learn to "tip toe"? What's the fun in that?

Yes a buddy of mine just had Buschur send him an upgraded Magnaflow muffler for his Bushur exhaust.Made it alot quiter but still had that trademark snarl. Give them a call they will hook you up.Or send Toddevo 8 a pm he can tell you all about it.
Yes without the cat it is still pretty loud thats why I went with the RMR exhaust. Mine is quiter and only sacrifices about 2-3 whp over the Bushur. Compared to a friend of mines set up.I would use the 3"UR high flow cat and you should see your noise level go down a bit.
Maybe he was being nice and saving you from a moving violation ticket? I doubt that you'll continue to have problems from that level of exhaust noise. Where in Northern VA did this happen? I live in NoVA too and I'm curious.

This happened in West Springfield on Rolling Rd between Braddock and Old Keene Mill. Of course, there is a police station on that road.
But, I've never been hassled for any of the exhausts I've had on my cars or for speeding for that matter in the 5+ years I've lived in this neighborhood. I think you're right, he might have been cutting me a break.
I just took another drive and really the exhaust isn't that loud. I love the sound. I'm going to hang on to the muffler I've got but I will investigate other stealthier options if they are available.

To my understanding, the Buschur Stg 3 incorporates a "cat-less" turbo back exhaust (3" all the way through). The lack of the converter is making you run loud.
Try a Borla muffler or the Works "exhale" muffler delete pipe.

4-bngr, he has stated twice that he has a cat.
The Magnaflow is the quietest muffler we have, with a cat it is really quiet.
I agree with what someone else said. He pulled you over for speed and let you off. He wrote you for something else that was a lesser charge.
First off, cities have noise laws. They are based on a DB reading. All you have to do is find out what the DB limit is and take it to court. IF he didn't use a DB meter to give you the ticket then they will need one to measure it, most cities don't have one.

Well, one would think that a law governing the noise levels from exhausts would be based on an objective measurement such as dB levels. But I live in Virginia! **** doesn't make sense here!
If you read the statute carefully it essentially says anything louder than stock is excessive and illegal.
If the can was painted black and even oval shaped he probably wouldn't have said a thing. As it was it was brand new, polished and stuck out like a sore thumb to him.
I agree that he let me off with a lesser (bull****) charge. If there was a statute for "you were really cookin' " then he would have written me up for that.
I'd still like to have a complete stealth option available. Sounds like I'm on my own in terms of R&D. First step, stove black...

hahahahaha. omg
now that is brilliant.. honestly. that is a great term for it.. haha. wow. i think i am crying.. i have to remember that term.
The Virginia law is completely vague and nearly impossible to prove in court. There's no noise standard and no methodology for testing it.
SEMA sponsors state legislation to change this, so that states will have a fixed db limit on noise and a testing procudure (SAE test standard J1169) to evaluate cars. Some states now use this standard.
I'd show up to court and argue that it's no louder than stock. How can they prove it's louder? Did the officer take sound readings on the side of the road? Is the officer an expert in exhaust noise levels? The officer probably is not aware of what a stock Evo sounds like. I know the Buschur/Magnaflow system is quieter than the STOCK Dodge SRT-4 here at the shop!
