In reality, the police are much more sensitive to the type of loud exhaust than the actual loudness. The higher the pitch the greater the chance you'll get a ticket. Harleys and big Doge Ram pickups with loud exhausts generally get ignored. Even muscle cars seem to get away with a lot more than your typical small displacement import. A couple of years ago I had a very loud exhaust on my Z28 (1-3/4" long tube headers, 3" y-pipe without cats and a 4" catback with a racing Flowmaster 4" muffler). I was constantly worried about getting pulled over with it and one day I was at a light when I noticed a cruiser sitting across the intersection. I tiptoed out short shifting as much as possible, but the blue light disco show came on for me too and he pulled me over. I was sure that it could only be the exhaust since I obviously wasn't speeding. Well, the officer comes to the window and the first thing the officer says is great sounding exhaust! Anyhow, he allegedly stopped me for no front plate but I think he just wanted to get a better look at the highly modded car. He let me go without incident.

I think you are almost right....it isn't the type of sound they go after, it is the type of car! Some cops hate what they percieve to be "little ricer punk wanabee's" and have the power to persecute them.

PS: The original poster was let off with a lesser ticket when he was speeding in the vacinity of a police station... my view is that was one damn cool cop!

Oh the cop was definately cool. No doubt about it. It also helps to have ZERO driving violations for over 7 years.

I think I've been caught up in the midst of a crack down and the Evo fits a certain profile they are targetting. I've definately become alot more self conscious about my bad driving habits. I can't do the things I used to get away with or what soccer moms in this area get away with, certainly not in this car.

I have noticed since I have two kids and now have 2 kids seats in the car (stage 2 S4) I have been left alone on more then one "asshat move". I would get some kids seats, they only cost you a few pounds

FWIW I was pulled over for the same thing back in the day when I had a 96 civic. I went to court over my Dynomax Ultra Flow muffler system. I was one of the first people called to the bench since my last name starts with a "B". I provided the judge with all of the db readings that I had done, my job has a db meter. I proved my case, but he asked me to have a seat and wait to be called again. After 3 hours of waiting, and the last person seen, he called me back up to the bench. He asked if I had driven the car to the court, and I said yes. We, the judge, cop, and me, went outside to "hear" what the car sounded like. He asked me to "wrap up the motor", so being the smart *** I am, I said what do you mean? I punched up the RPM's to about 4K and he said ok. He then proceeded to tell me that I should have never put an aftermarket exhaust on the car. He dismissed the ticket, but told me he would make me wait in his court again if I came back with another ticket. What a bunch of a$$holes!!!
