Loudness of Car in Mass Question

I'm planning on bringing my car to Boston when I move up for college, and while I was browsing some threads, I ran across this:

Not a single exhaust that any vendor sells is legal in Massachusetts.

---------------------
Chapter 90: Section 16. Offensive or illegal operation of motor vehicles

No person shall use a muffler cut-out or by-pass. No person shall operate a motor vehicle on any way which motor vehicle is equipped (1) with a muffler from which the baffle plates, screens or other original internal parts have been removed and not replaced; or (2) with an exhaust system which has been modified in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the exhaust.
---------------------

Also, to add to it, reading the "amplify" portion really can't be fought either. I have gone to court and even brought paperwork mentioning XXX exhaust is 50 state legal, carb legal, below 93db and so on. The way the law interprets the above is you CAN NOT modify your exhaust.

Just adding that in. Not bad mouthing this product or anything else. Just mentioning that I always see vendors state these things, and they really aren't what it means anymore.
Does this mean that ANY car in the state of Massachusetts has to comply to that law? I'm bringing my car from Texas, and I will continue to run Texas plates and everything so I'm unsure if the law still applies. Thanks!

Many states have this rule. In most, they use it when you are being a jerk and if they already have you pulled over. I.e. you were speeding, nasty to the officer - they will tack on the exhaust ticket.

BUT, if you have out of state plates, you should not be pulled over for it. At least in my experience. I had MI plates in NJ/PA when I worked out there. Never was pulled over for my exhaust. And if you were pulled over the argument is that in your home state, its not illegal. You are not a resident of that state then you cannot be subjected to the rule. So keep you out of state plate and license.

It depends where you're driving too. I live north of boston in the salem area, but i grew up in western mass in the amherst/northampton area. Anytime i drive back home i'm almost guaranteed to get stopped unless i have my silencer in, and even then i'll get stopped sometimes. I haven't been ticketed for it yet as i've been extremely polite every time.

In boston i've only been pulled over once and as stated earlier, i was accelerating WOT getting on the highway and didn't see the cop. Again... got out of it for being polite and respectful.

I was running an ebay exhaust with no cat for a short time in boston (bought the car that way) and i got pulled over within the first couple of days accelerating onto Rt 2. I then switched to one of the quieter exhausts and put a magnaflow inline resonator in and havne't been bothered since.

In a previous evo I used BR's magnaflow tbe as well with no police issues, I just had to play stupid with the inspection guy once a year.

If you're running texas plates and not running one of the loudest mufflers wot past a cop you should be fine. Goodluck finding parking in Boston with out of state plates though, not sure if you're living in the city limits or not.

Thanks a lot for the advice, guys. Right now I'm running a Trust catback (no secondary silencers), but it's not too loud since I'm still on stock cat/downpipe. Probably will be changing that out soon, will see if it's ridiculously loud.

I'll actually be outside of city limits, will be in Medford.

Just FYI, you absolutely CAN be ticketed in MA for loud exhaust with out of state plates. It is considered a moving violation here and "not from MA" is not an excuse. This is in direct contrast to the tint law which has a clause that makes the law not applicable to cars registered out of state.

My buddy is a Connecticut State trooper and I was just asking him about this the other day. He said that 99% of time they won’t pull you over for loud exhaust, they were told it’s a waist of time because it almost always gets thrown out in court because the individual is from out of state. With that being said, it has been done; you just have to get pulled over by a huge dick head of a police officer who’s having a really bad day.

I mean I drove around for 2 years with a turbo xs RFL before i received a citation (that i won in court) and now I have a 3 inch straight pipe..no cat...no resonator...no muffler, and I have passed plenty of cops with no issue.

Good luck man!

PS. where are you going to school?

Very true, its happened to my MD friend. I asked why and the officer blatently said "If you're from a state that doesn't require seatbelts and then you come to MA and drive through do you still have to wear seatbelts?
