I'm having a problem where...as i pick up speed, if i turn my steering wheel to the right slightly i start getting a weird like, womp womp womp noise, you'd think it was the tires rubbing, but they're not rubbing at all, as i pick up speed, it gets louder and i can feel it more like say...taking an offramp that curves to the right at 40MPH+

it gets really bad when i'm doing around 70MPH+ the slightest turn of the wheel to the right will make the noise and vibrations and the more i turn it the worse it gets...

i got my wheels aligned, camber and caster are good so the tires rubbing is ruled out, nothing in the shroud area is hitting against the tires or wobbling, we've narrowed it down to something in the driveline, like maybe the VCU kicking up the speed of other tires while turning? but it doesn't do the noise while going slower like 0-25MPH or so, i can even rip a turn to the point of where you know the car would have to be adding power to other wheels to compensate and it won't do it, but once the speed is above 40MPH or maybe even 35, turning to the right just makes the noise, it never does it turning left and when i let off the gas after going like 50 or 60MPH i get some weird noise that goes away if i push the clutch in...

is one of my differentials going bad? the transmission seems to be in great shape, clutch is brand new(problem was happening before i changed the clutch), the car has 78k miles on it total

please help i don't want to spend thousands digging into parts that i don't need to be going into..

 

U check ur wheel bearings?

 

Wheel bearings you should be able to hear straight as well and at lower speeds too.

Have you checked for any excessive play in your suspension somewhere? Might be a bad axle, the boot may not necessarily be torn but it can be bad internally. Does the noise occur if you turn your wheel with the car stationary?

 

Does your tire have excessive wear on the inside? It could be seperating.

 

I vote for wheel bearings or maybe a bad cv

 

no wear marks on the tires, only does it while slightly turning to the right or turning heavy to the right past 35-40MPH and gets worse as i go faster. it doesn't do it while going straight, only while turning and having speed, when the alignment was done i had everything tightened up, the wheel bearing isn't bad in the sense that the tire isn't wobbling, when i push or pull on it, or giving any play at all, but it could be bad and just not showing that symptom, I just don't want to replace that and find out it's not that either...

i literally get no noise or anything weird at low low speeds or stopped, it sounds like it's coming from the front when i'm getting the womp noise, but when i'm doing like 50-60 and let off and get a weird rotational rattling noise it sounds like it's coming from the back....that would just be my luck to have a problem with the rear diff and the front axle..


before anyone else asks, it is not the tires rubbing...and the vibration you can really feel in the car so it's not something small...feels rotation and in the driveline

 

transfercase? Check the condition of your drivetrain fluids and make sure there is no abnormal amounts of shiny stuff or dirty fluid. What if your coasting in neutral and you turn the wheel, any noise then?

 

I noticed a similar thing on my car. I'd turn one way and would get a noise, maybe not as bad as yours. My tires were about worn down to the wear bars. I rotated tires front to rear and the noise moved to the rear. With new tires the noise was gone.

 

I would check the condition of your driveshaft carrier support bushings and your carrier bearing. Usually carrier bearing you would hear going straight even at lower speeds though, but I can see bad support bushings causing noise on decel. I may still have my oem ones somewhere laying around if you end up needing one.

 

I should add that I was running what Tire Rack calls a "ultra high performance summer tire". Tires in this category as they wear, make noise, sometimes lots of noise. This noise can be mistaken for bad wheel bearingse and other things.

 

Sounds more like a bad CV axle from the description. Possibly a wheel bearing once you load it up by turning, have seen this happen plenty of times. Quiet while straight till the weight of the car helps add too much stress to it when turning. Do you have access to a lift? If so, get a driver's side axle, OEM or Aftermarket, doesn't matter for this, and change it. Drive it and see what if anything has changed. If it doesn't work, take it back. All part stores including the dealer will take the axle back, I know, I work for a dealer. At least then you will have eliminated the axle. I only suggest this cause I had to do the same thing for a customer last month, put an aftermarket axle in for a shake, fixed the shake, got a noise though. Convinced them to get an OEM axle instead, fixed the shake and had no noise. Give it a shot and let us know. Good luck.

 

I had a buddy with something similar...turned right and loud noise as if it was the CV. It turned out to be a bad engine mount that would cause the exhaust to hit the body of the car creating a noise that sounded like rubbing.

His car was an auto so we were able to foot brake the engine and replicate the noise and see the excessive movement of the engine. Try pulling the emergency brake and see if you can load the engine by partially engaging(slipping) the clutch and have someone check for worn engine mount.

 

it makes the noise when i have the clutch in and am coasting, the only real variable needed here is the speed needs to be at least 35MPH +

i get another noise when i am going 50mph+ and let off, it's a rotational rumbling noise(kind of like when you have an old TV on with no cable connected, white and black dot screen with that noise on(white noise), not sure if it's related to my turning issue, noise stops if i push the clutch in...wondering if my differential is bad or if this could be related to the turning problem...
^ This happens while driving straight, haven't tested left or right but i'm sure it would happen there too

i'll get the car on a lift and have my mechanic check my fluids and see if he can figure it out, he always charges me a few hours less than what it actually takes him to do the job and only charges me 60 an hour since i've went to him for 6 years and i have a VR-4 before, plenty of work to keep him paid even at a dicounted rate...


Also please stop asking me about tires and telling me tire stories i've already said it's not tire rubbing and mine are fairly new they aren't a 200 dollar set of kumhos or anything they're fine for this car.

 

If it can be duplicated on a lift, that would be great and make it much easier to pinpoint. If not, see if your mechanic has a good set of Chassis Ears, have him hook them up to the upper and lower control arms on the right front and as close to the diff as possible without risk of them coming off. Then drive it and make the noise happen while listening to the various points. He'll probably let you drive while he listens since you have a good rep with him. Also, did the noise while driving straight at 50+ just start after the clutch? Or has it been there before? Possible release bearing issue maybe? Just throwing ideas out there for you. Keep posting and we all will keep trying to help.

 

i have this same exact problem and its starting to drive me crazy -_- all my axles are new and i have new tires
