Advice please, which turbo 500hp from 2.0L

Hi gents,

I'm relatively new to the EVO world and I recently purchased a very clean IX with 16000km approx 10000miles. The car currently runs a FP green(old spec) and I'm
looking for a little more bhp. I must also add I run the car on e75 (75% eth 25% Pump gas 95 oct). I use the car on weekends and track days.

The car also has the following bits from what I know
Cosworth 272 cams, springs, retainers
Stock bottom end
Stock inlet manifold
Stock exhaust manifold
Precision 1000cc injectors
Upgraded fuel pump, not sure which one
AMS FMIC and plumbing
Apex Air filter MAF still used
3 inch works exhaust NO CATS
some sort of fully programeable management. Not ECUTEK but I know it's similar

Currently the car does about 400hp on a hub Dyno at 2 bar/ 28 psi.

My goal is a true 500hp at the flywheel. So I'd guess that about 450whp????

Any suggestion on turbo options?
I was thinking FP BB RED OR BBK C but I'd appreciate some advice from the pro's.
Also I live in Johannesburg which is approx 4500 feet above sea level... Sigh...

Also is this the right thread to post this in?

Is your engine all stock? 400hp is almost the limit for a stock engine, with any further power, I'd recommend upgrading engine internals, installing, aftermarket piston, con rods, & bearings. You could keep the stock crankshaft if you wish, although, 2.0L + big turbo = considerable turbo lag.
Many turbo options would produce 500hp & more, one good choice is the Garrett GT35R.

upgrade to a fp green 73 HTA and you will be happy or a fp black.

as long as you keep the torque down your stock block will handle the power just fine as long as it had no history of past abuse on it tune wise or owner wise regarding maintenance and so forth.

Personally would go with a stock frame turbo and e85 if you have the option

otherwise I would choose a Precision turbo, such as a 6262 but as foxbat mentioned... internals would certainly need upgrading otherwise you're playing with fire with matches soaked in gasoline... All depends on the funding you have for this. 500 hp doesnt come cheap...

HTA Green is a good match for 450whp, if you want 500whp I would recommend the Black. If you want to do this on 98 RON then you will need to run a 35R.

a fpr or fuel pump failure is more then likely to take the engine out before rods buckle at just 500whp level with controlled torque on the stock block. i tune them everyday so i get a feel for what these cars are capable of power wise on stock internals.

you will be missing out on torque, but most dont mind that. you would be surprised how many high powered stock blocks exist out there. sure they are not running a lot of torque, .. the minimal required to attain their peak HP number, but they do hold up pretty well.

insurance is to build the block though yes so you don't jeopardize the good core in the car right now.

OP: Does your budget allow for a ball-bearing turbo? If so, I might try a 3B(BBK-B BB), or alternately an FP BB Red. In a journal bearing turbo, I would look at the MAP EF3.

EDIT: I reread your thread, and reconsidering, I think that I'd go along with Aaron and Tom, and say that a BB Black will easily produce enough power to get you to 450 WHP. The Red, or the 3B might not get you quite to that level. The BBK-C might get you there as well, but there isn't much data on that turbo yet.

The only question mark for me is the relative octane rating of the fuel and how important spool-up is to your application.

Fp black if you dont mind some lag. If you do, go with the FP red. 450awhp shouldn't be too hard to reach.

sorry for not replying sooner, been hectic at work.

i want to remind you i'm looking for 500bhp at the flywheel. i know 500whp is another story all together!!! something cool about saying you drive a 500bhp cabby...

i'm definately keen on BB core setup. i'm not sure if i'm mistaken but it seems as if the BB cores are a relatively new adition to the EVO scene? except for garret i take it?

believe it or not we actually have some pretty good tuners down here in South Africa, so i'm confident we can manage the boost as the turbo spools to prevent excessive torque and busted rods!

i had a IX a few years back with a BBK on, not sure what spec but it was slightly stronger at the top ( 7000 rpm ) than the FP GREEN on my new car. i enjoyed how the BBK seemed to rev more freely.

i was thinking either send my FP GREEN to the US and get it upgraded to a FP BB RED

OR...

BBK BB, but i'm not sure how the B or C or Race etc compare

also.. Our 95 oct fuel in south africa is terrible! The 95 is RON so i'd guess it's about as good as your worst 91oct in the US. this is why we all pretty much run our "STRONG TURBO" cars on ethanol.
