Get under the car and look?

Take a picture and post it up and we can tell you what you've got under there.

I've seen many catted downpipes, It would have a wide converter housing.

I'm guessing you've owned a Subaru.

I just went through the same thing. My downpipe was a cat delete so I had to buy a new downpipe and a high flow cat. I still haven't had it inspected but its just a visual so I should be ok.

Crawl under the car. If you see heat shields like the picture posted you have a cat (meow). If you don't then you need to see if you have a test pipe that can be replaced with a cat.

Also the cat didn't really quiet my exhaust down so I wouldn't base anything on that.

It is difficult enough as is to get any large diameter DP to fit past the TC. I can't even begin to visualize a catted DP. There are DP's that eliminate the cat altogether such as the DC "cat-delete" DP.

If you have one of these cat-delete DP's then you are gonna need a catalytic convertor and a shortie stock like DP to get the car legal for smog test. There are some DP's that have a flex section that could maybe be mistaken for a cat.

Like the other guys stated, get your car up on a lift and get underneath to look around. You may have to borrow a stock DP and cat just like the one pictured in Kevin's post, from another local just to pass the smog test.

I thought so. My WRX came with a pre-catalytic converter, a front catalytic converter and a rear catalytic converter. At least that year (2004) the STI exhaust was the same.
