Strong exhaust smell? - high flow cat

Recently installed an ETS Mitsubishi Evolution X High Flow Cat *Street* Test Pipe as a part of a new 3" exhaust system.

Experiencing a very strong exhaust smell on hard acceleration, when the windows are down. I thought this was a symptom of the test pipes but not the high-flow cats.

I have around ~700 miles on the system.

Anyone else experiencing this? Thoughts?

Thanks!

You might still have some extra smell due to the extra flow, but it shouldn't be anything like a testpipe.. You get that smell just idling.. haha

Are you sure there are no leaks or anything? You shouldn't smell much of anything at WOT, until you come to a stop..

Also, not sure about ETS's cats, but sometimes they kind of "break in".. so the smell with go away with time..

when i first read it, i thought it was in the "break in" period..but you have about 700 miles so it is probably broken in already..not sure exactly what it could be. Hope someone helps you out!

It means either you have an exhaust leak or you are not going fast enough. :}

Interesting. ok. I'll have to check the gaskets. Where do you think it might be leaking from?

I only smell it on hard accel, if that matters. Would think if it was a leak you'd smell it no matter what?

Also...on hard accel, you can see visible exhaust plumes coming out the exhaust + exhaust 'soot' builds up (lightly) on the back side of trunk. This would indicate that a good amount of "dirty" exhaust is coming out the tailpipes.

Any of this change the thinking on leak?

Thanks for your help all!

Sounds like your car is running rich. What other mods do you have?

I have a HFC and don't smell anything. I also never got soot on my truck or bumper.

Well, even with the stock cat, you will see some black exhaust out the back at WOT. A tune will help. And give you more power..

Ya, I've been to FFtech and have had a pro tune completed. I'll have to give them a call and see what they say.

I have the ets test pipe. I smell exhaust for about 1 sniff or 2 seconds when I have windows down and when I come to a stop after traveling at some speed. With a hfcat or test pipe I would assume this is normal because there are either no or close to no restrictions for the exhaust gases when you replace the stock cat which is the most restrictive part of the exhaust system. I don't think you have a vehicle issue. It's just the becauseracecar life!! Enjoy!!

anyone with a TP set up smell it through their vents when you turn the heat on? Every morning when I go out to start the car and get the heat going, I get a strong smell of exhaust. I don't think it's done this before but not sure (never really used the heat until moving to Buffalo). Exhaust leak maybe?

I had Cobb HFC for over a year, never had bad strong smell even on the track. Recently i changed it into testpipe, suddenly it smells bad that i have to roll my windows up and turn fan on for inner recycling... But the performance gain is well worthy lol. Oh well...

I tried on a cheap hiflo cat found in Ebay and it stunk too.
And, even w/ cel fix kept getting cels...

I believed that it needs a tune to lean her out...
Till then the stock cat went back in.

Never had this issue with my ETS High Flow Cat. Installed the HFC on a Thursday and drove to Orange County the next day for a Baka tune!!! Been running on the tune for the last 8 months at 15,000 miles.
