Oil Pickup tube to pan clearance

Ive had a quite a few EVOs in for spun rod bearings lately. One thing I noticed they all had in common was that you can see an inprint inside the bottom of the oil pan of the oil pickup tube. Ive had a few built motors, but also stock cars that have never had the pan off. They dont apear to be dented either. One motor I just finished would not build pressure after the build so I pulled the pan and modded the pickup tube and oil pressure went right up. I am kind of curious if anyone else has noticed this??

Same to mine few years bck and its still remain a mystery as how there's a inprint on the bottom of the oil pan as the oil pan is not dented at all.

What ive done is we cut the oil pick-up pipe duck mouth and my car have been running happily for 2 years now (touch wood).

That is about the same as the few Ive seen. I also cut the mouth on the pickup tube. Im kinda wondering how far from the bottom its suppose to be from the factory. I cut the last one 3/8 inch up.

what mod you did on the pickup? I am having issues with my new build not building enough pressure.

I measured the stock clearence when I built the last engine and it was real low... like 2mm.. I just adjusted the pickup a bit, increased the clearance to 4 mm or so..

I noticed low clearance on my aeroflow sump but the pick up had a couple of little tabs on the end so that it can't come up against the sump bottom

When I made my modified oil pan I also noticed the clearance was low, but that was partially due to the pan being modified. The stock gap with a new pan is ~0.100" from what I measured using Play-Doh. Buy a container of Play-Doh and ball it up on the end of the pickup tube and then press the pan flat to the engine and remove. You can then measure the thickness of the Play-Doy using some calipers to get a decent idea for the clearance. From what I read on the internet the typical recommended clearance is 1/4" so I shortened the end of the pickup to obtain the desired clearance. I am not sure it matters, but I kept the opening area the same as stock by first welding a piece of flat stainless plate to the pickup and then welding the original opening to the plate.

Not sure on your pickup question but if the car is making decent power then going to a larger pan will also help with bearing life. More volume and trap doors will help avoid starvation .

Racefab makes a proven pan and a revised pickup. There are some knockoffs that use the stock pickup also.

AMS is also an option also.

Good luck with it.
