Need HELP deciding on CLUTCH!! 700+hp
Hey guys, I need some good quality info on what clutch to run. All opinions are of course welcome, but I'm hoping to find some ppl with first hand experience. I've researched quite a bit on the different clutches ppl are using and I'm having a hard time finding good solid answers. I'm looking to make over 700hp with my 2.3 stroker and need to find a clutch that can hold. This car never sees the track (any track) ...this car is my toy that I only take out on the streets. That being said, I probably wont ever launch this car, as there would be no point, and I will mostly be driving normally with the occasional race. I do drive aggressively, as I'm sure most Evo owners do, but nothing too serious. Going from my last setup, I still have my ACT 6 puck clutch and it has less than 2k miles on it...but unfortunately, I'm not sure it'll be able to handle the torque. However, I don't really want to spend 1500+ on a new freakin' clutch...especially since I just put the tranny back in without thinking about the clutch
... SOOO, I need to know what everyone is experiencing with their clutches. If I have to spend the money so be it, but I want something that will last and not go through clutch disks like water. As of right now I'm leaning towards Quartermaster 8-leg Race... Thoughts? aaannnddd GO!

I read this thread earlier... Given that you have the same clutch, do you have any opinion on it?

That thread is the exact reason I have yet to purchase or recommend the exedy triple. If they sort out the hub isses which should be as easy as machining it out of titanium or a very hard treated steel I am in to buy one.

I run a Tilton twin carbon as my car makes 830whp on a mustang dyno and is a drag car only. However I have driven many different clutches on high power evos as well as have quite a few friends with high hp Evos that had to make the same decision as you. Your going to end up spending money on the clutch as your power levels will demand it when you actually use your car. My suggestion is the quartermaster hydraulic 8 leg. Very smooth engagement, holds power well, shifts great and is a push conversion making you never have to worry about The retainer clip popping out. My good friend Joey runs that in junkbox and has gone 8s on that clutch and makes 800whp. I have driven a few quartermaster and I have nothing but good things to say. Just my opinion, but for the price as quality I think it would be your best choice.

I'd probably rather go with the race version because it can hold more torque and they're the same price. Might as well go big or go home. I'm still not dead set on the quartermaster just yet, but with all the stuff I'm reading about the Exedy triple is making me think that the QM is the more practical clutch...
First off, the power in which a clutch can hold is rated in torque and not horsepower.
Given your very limited budget for a clutch and your power goals, the QM 8 leg is your only choice. An Exedy triple, which probably won't hold any more power than the QM (and you have to worry about the clip popping off) is almost $1000 more.
QM all the way.

... I'm just never satisfied lol. This is also the reason I'm looking for the best bang for the buck and it looks like QM is the best option so far. I am trying to find more on how long they last under relatively normal driving conditions. If I knew that the Exedy would outlast the QM by a dramatic amount, the money wouldn't be the issue...but I'm not a huge fan of throwing money away on something thats exactly the same as something else thats half the cost. I assume you have a QM clutch? If so, what has been your experience thus far? Thanks for your help
