O-ring'ing is really a good extra bit of insurance on a 4G64 due to less material between cylinders. Some guys o-ring the head, some o-ring the block. Most importantly though is proper tune and proper head gasket installation/retorquing to keep the HG happy on a 4G64.

I O-ringed my 2.0 block.

It's a good insurance policy.

Like said above, o-ringing is an added assurance but most importantly be sure you have clean plane surfaces between the head and block, its the most critical thing next to proper head torquing.

It's definitely a good thing to do. Had my head done when I blew a head gasket just as added insurance.

no o-ringing. 600+whp. Head was modified for the 4G64. 1 season of lots and lots, of hard, hard racing (mostly dragstrip). HP is going up this season...

English puts out alot to 2.4LRs and (i could be wrong) but not one of them i have see is O-Ringed. Probably because the Crew at English know what they are doing and do the gasket and torquing right so they dont need to.

They are building my LR2.4 right now, no O-ring for me.

Im gonna guess the smoothed out the combustion chamber for the larger bore size of the 4G64. That way you dont have any funky quench areas.
