Balance shaft removal in car questions..

Hey guys,

I've done and seen the balance shaft removal and bearing install with the engine out of car. pretty straight forward.

My question is this...

Has anyone had any luck, since the engine is in the car, installing the stub shaft or AMS type shaft and leaving the other shaft disconnected but the gear still on for the balance belt.

I have seen this and it says it is possible: http://www.vfaq.com/mods/balance-shafts.html

Thanks for your input.

I would never do that. The balance shafts have oil grooves in them that if the shaft moves to the wrong position can allow too much oil to escape causing low oil pressure at idle and damage to the bearings. I have removed the balance shafts in the car and it is a pita but well worth it.

okay, just a question then. How did you get the shaft with both bearing out while in the car? it doesn't seem to get low enough or did you cut it and remove it in two pieces??

Good luck getting the oil pump off while the engine is in the car. And you if do manage to get the oil pump out, good luck removing the shafts from the engine, especially the rear shaft.

I'm pretty sure some cutting was involved.

Yeah exactly the trick is to swap the bearing 180 degrees to get the oil passage closed off. Problem with it is, is in the car its really gonna be tough to get the thing in and out being everything in the way on the car. Plus when you do it that way with the bearing you need to port out the oil relief valve to take the oil pressure down some being it will have a little extra oil pressure. I did this in one of my cars and I have stupid oil pressure but I also plugged the oil squirters so that didn't help.

Yeah, I got the oil pan and pump out already.
Just the stupid rear shaft only comes out half way because you have to angle it down to remove. I was thinking cut the damn shaft in half then acess both rear bearings to rotate and or install new block off bearings.

And anyway, this engine will be removed in a couple months for a different one(Built internals, etc) We are just doing this as a precaution be cause the owner had a balance shaft belt snap on him a while back on a different car and the engine was toast.

Did you take the roll stop support bar out??

I'm just wondering how you got the engine low enough to remove the shaft.

I have a fender engine support bar that I used to lower the whole engine and trans while everything was hooked up and all motor mounts removed.

Thanks for the input guys.

Lowered the roll stopper and the engine lowered enough to get the shaft out and kock the bearings out.

Thanks again.
