Is this normal?

So I have been diagnosing my car step by step trying to find the culprit behind my very late spool up ( I don't spool until redline), after I got my turbine housing and EM back from buschur to be ported.

I have explored EVERY possible problem related to my issue. Adjusted my WGA preload, made sure restrictor pills are in place, ran a boost leak test, checked all hoses, clamps, and boost lines, swapped DV's with my buddies IX that boosts just fine, etc. And still haven't been able to solve my problem.

But today I may have found the problem, but need your help to know for sure! Is wastegate play like this normal (found in video attached)? The flapper appears to be shut and sealing the gate. But could play in the cotter pin cause it to not properly seal completely?

Yes, we had the wastegate preloaded, and we had it as tight as we could get it. Maybe we over preloaded it? If that's possible?

Is the flapper fully seating? If you loosen up the preload some does it still move around freely like that?

Yes it appeared to be fully sealing the gate, and I'm pretty sure the play was still there when I had the preload not as tight.

If the actuator was on and loaded you should not be able to spin the flapper cover. I'd say there's too much play in the hole the shaft comes through.

This is a stock MHI IX actuator, right?

I think slc_evo69 figured out he was going the wrong way with the adjustment.

It is definitely preloaded, that was actually the very first thing I did when I encountered my problem. I even watched your video and that is exactly what I did to preload it. Not to mention before I preloaded I was hardly boosting at all, after I preloaded it I now boost... it just isn't until very late.

And yes it is the stock IX WG, and yes the turbo is on the car.

OK, I'll give you the no BS way to fix your problem. Well, actuallly you'll have to deal with my BS. But, we will get to the source of your problem and fix it.

The fireman is right....you are not preloaded enough. If as in the vid, you can jiggle and move the flapper valve horizontally across the seat, then spring pressure is too minimal...way too minimal. Part of the problem is that you have the wimpy stock actuator. But, we can work with that up to a point. But, you must do what I tell you to do.

I want to know how many threads are visible behind the backup nut on the actuator rod? We gotta get your turbo spooling quicker than it is, dude.

got to make it shorter

Looking at your video again I don't see any threads showing on the rod below the locking nut. Either the bends in rod got straightened out making it longer or the actuator isn't mounted right. With the right preload you need to pull the actuator rod with a channel locks or use a little compressed air to get the rod back on the arm.

You're turning it the right way.

This is a better video, not an evo but the adjustment is the same.

this guy is going to hurt himself but it gives you an idea of the force required to do it right.
