Question Shep trans stage 2 - 5 speed

Regarding the shep stage 2 for an Evo 9 what do they actually do to the trans to strengthen it the website is seriously low on detail.

How much power can the sheptrans stage 2 hold?

I'm not going to call them it's a bit concerning placing only options on your websites for sale page a brand new gear box cost $3000 so $3395 gets you what? Beside the extra "options". I need to see third party testimonies about what gets done to the box.

As far as I can tell you get a stock NEW 5 Speed with optional final drive, remchem ISF and billet output tube. Nothing gets done to the gears except for ISF coating.

Just my opinion:

Most of the time, you are getting a properly assembled and shimmed trans. The Evo internals are pretty stout, so making sure the synchronization and shimming/preload is key to making it shift correctly. They probably modify the sychros in that trans to shift at high RPM and are either modified stock synchros or aftermarket made from better material. My guess is OEM.

Beyond that, they have several options for the gear ratios, final drive and of course the billet output tube.

Remember that most of the time the differential likes to break in an AWD car, so you'll likely end up wanting to get the T-Case rebuild with the Quaife or Wavetrac LSD in it. Beyond that, my ideal street/strip setup involves a $900 rebuild with the optional Billet Output Tube and a rebuilt T-Case with the Wavetrac. I have a friend running mid 10's on that setup with no issues for years with that setup - except with a Quaife diff.

This isn't unheard of. All the DSM performance transmissions rob parts out of the GVR4 or JDM early EVOs to be "bullet proof". But really what you're buying is a bunch of OEM parts from different Mitsu transmissions that have been strategically assembled. The real magic is in the synchros and shims - that's what will make it shift well or not. The weak parts in the DSM trans is 4th gear and the stock 2-spider. The fix? No real fix for 4th, and they machine the stock diff to accept another 2 stock spider gears OR replace with a $900 Quaife. Either way, there's guys out there runnin 8's and 9's on an essentially "stock parts" transmission.

Hope this helps...

I would, of course, make sure you call and talk to trevor and ask all questions before making any decisions.

Jon@TRE is the man. I've got a review to write for him in regards to his rear diff. I know everyone complains about his customer service however I was more than pleased with everything he did for me. Maybe I was lucky but I spoke with him on the phone countless times before sending in my diff as well as a couple of times once it was in his possession. Turn around time was a couple of days and he even gave me a ring a couple weeks later to check in and see how I like it.

I've heard way too many negative things about the products coming out of Shep's doors lately. The only complaint I have ever heard about Jon is his customer service. Just my .02

Seems TRE is the man he goes into great detail explaining how he fixes everything wrong with the Evo 5 speed and is very thorough and detailed. Too bad his web site says no international shipping no exceptions
