ACT clutch - problems after first launch

05 Evo making about 320whp. ACT sprung 6 puck. I installed the clutch 2 years/20k miles ago but only just recently launched it for the first time. The symptoms as follows:

Horrible chattering/grinding noise when the clutch is engaging. It is especially bad starting from a dead stop. The car also shudders/jerks pretty badly when going from a stop and the pedal has a gritty feel to it through engagement. Once moving it shifts pretty well and engagement is quiet and smooth as long as the shifts are pretty well rev matched.

Now I suspect that the springs in the disc failed but I'd like to get the community's opinion in case it could be something else. If it is the springs then I have a few questions...is the car safe to drive until a replacement ships? Will the pressure plate be reusable?

I'm thinking about cutting my losses with ACT and springing (no pun intended) for a twin disc. If I decide to bail on ACT are there options besides a twin disc I should be looking into?

I would suggest that the first thing to do is to find out what exactly is going on in that bellhousing (or maybe hydraulics?), especially since 320whp is far short of requiring a twin.

There are quite a few things that could be going wrong, but my guessing won't really help you much. If it really is a problem with the clutch itself, contact ACT and see what can be done to work it out.

I had a similar issue with a stock clutch..basically it got launched once and badly scored the flywheel. Rough engagement esp in morning, but once warmed up and going it had fairly smooth engagement. On replacement, we found the flywheel badly scored with a rough patch of ~ 3 inches long and 1 inch wide on one side of the flywheel. This was deep enough that machining would not take it off. ~ 20-30 thou deep.

Replaced the flywheel and brand new stock clutch and has been like butter for a year now.

Not a fan of ACT clutches so i would not recommend that but 320 whp is well inside of the stock clutch capability. But I personally would not launch on it , tho

Check your pressure plate bolts. If they arnt tight you get a ticking/chatter noise. Or as someone else said yiu may have launched a litle wonky and the disc or flywheel could have sone flaws from heat

320 is a conservative number and I'm looking for a maximum of about 425. Is there another quality brand I should be looking at?
