HKS 272 Cams

Hey ya'll I have a 2001 evo 7 and am thinking of doing a cam upgrade( after all my bolt ons) just to get a small bit more spool and the sound of a lumpy cam is pretty cool

Now i know people run the HKS 272 on a factory evo VIII valve train with no float or problems but considering the evo 7 came with different springs will that still be the same or will i have to get unrated spring?

I did try searching but could only find Evo 8 Specs

Cheers

Lumpy cam sound, yes
more spool, no
More lag is expected with any type of 272 cams, however, the HKS have minimal over stock lag compared to other 272 cams.
They should fit fine on your 7 with stock springs & retainers, unless your car is high mileage then the springs would need to be replaced anyway.

HKS are considered a very mild cam upgrade now. you will see a little gain in spool power, but the cost is very high. Look into a set of GSE S2 cams. You will get all you are looking for and then some.

Thanks for the info, im more just looking for the lumpy sound would 264's make the lumpy sound ?, i find the car powerful enough i just wont want to lose to much mid range.

Also the hks 272's seem quite cheap as many people are selling them

Currently running hks 272 with stock valve train, the gain is pretty minimal. I don't really think its a very desired cam, the car I have came with them, so I left them in.

How can you judge that the gains are minimal if they came with the car?

A few years back AMS did a dyno comparison involving several cam brands on a E8/GT35R:

the HKS 272 showed significant gains, it was less than those of the Kelford & S2 but on the other hand it was the best in terms spool.

I currently have HKS 272s and they're actually quite livable...I remember people saying not to get them as it hinders DD but honestly I don't really notice

I have had a stock turbo car with the only upgrade being S2s and a GT35 car with HKS 272s.
I can tell you that is the wrong way around of doing things, should have had the S2s on the GT35 car and visa verse.

If your looking for a very stock easy to drive setup the HKS is great. More power wanted, sure the S2s are the way to go. Its hard to compare my two cars with the 2 cams since the turbos are vastly different but as stated earlier, you can pop in some HKSs on a stock car and notice gains and not have to worry about anything else. If your going S2s i suggest new springs too. The HKS did make the lumpy sound and was a breeze to drive. Cant go wrong with the price they go for around here either.

I guess I didn't clarify, sorry. I drove the vehicle before the cams were installed and tuned on the same fuel and turbo setup. Installing the cams were part of the deal. I also have a buddy who tunes many many evos and gains are much lower on the hks cams vs other ones, however you can run them on stock valvetrain.

Don't get me wrong, the cams make a difference, but for the cost I probably would have gone a different setup if I had to pay for them.

I'm pretty sure part numbers were the same on the valvetrain between 8 and 7, I would check with a dealership, I am sure they can look up part numbers and cross ref them with the 8.
