Oil consumption on new built engine. Checklist.

Hi mates!

I have experienced abnormal oil consumption on several new built engines (from max to min on the dipstick in 700 or less miles of city traffic driving) and wanted to ask what can be the reason of such consumption. May be you could help to work out a list of parts and procedures that should be checked or done to help diagnose and prevent that kind of oil consumption.

The last engine that has experienced such problems was built 2.3 using Wiseco 1400HD pistons in 4g63 block. Typical used PTW clearance is 0.0027-0.0039 (0.07-0.1mm), rings and ring gaps are always checked and set according to the piston manufacturer manual. Oil used - Motul 300V 10w40, changed every 3000miles.

There is no smoke during start-ups, free revving or full-throttle accelerations, and no signs of major oil leakage.

Please care to share any thoughts and versions that can help to find the root of the problem.

Try a more traditional oil (say, Rotella 15w40).

My twin turbo Corvette used oil when using a similar 'boutique' oil as yours, and stopped when going to Rotella. NO OTHER CHANGES.

Isn't that Shell oil for diesel engines? What about mobil, castrol, agipl, liqui moly?

So the Motul is a synthetic rt? Did you break your motor in on non synthetic first? If not, likely your rings arent seating properly causing the oil consumption.

The engene was broken in on the same oil. I believe I noticed the increase of oil consumption over first hundreds of miles.

do a cyl leakdown test , I always use either running in oil or mineral oil in a newly built engine for a least 500mls

Have you used Motul? When I switched FROM rotella TO Motul in my old Civic track car I had a significant DECREASE in oil consumption. Same grade to same grade.

My .02cents. I can't make a recommendation for your issue OP, sorry.

Leakdown test showed less then ~5% in each cylinder.

No, I don't use or need a boutique oil for my application.

What makes you say it is a boutique oil? I have not heard that term before. It is fairly standard in the EU from my understanding.

I would suggest you try it before you decide it is instantly inferior. Dismissal of something while claiming it is inferior gives you absolutely no logic/rational to stand upon. If you have some sort of evidence, data, or even an observation that backs up what you have said (e.g. valuable input for this thread) please share.

I've noticed a lot of motors built with the stroker pistons tend to use more oil than pistons with the full compression height and ring package.

Clueless.

1)I gave a real life example of how an oil swap reduced oil consumption.

2)I send out my CONVENTIONAL STORE BOUGHT OIL out to Blackstone on a regular basis to have it anyalized and it's PROVEN to work great in my engine that makes more power per CI then anything you've ever owned. You're not worth my time to get off of the couch to go get the most recent one and upload it. However I'll do you a favor and link you to the thread I posted here on EvoM a few years ago regarding the same subject-

Keep pourin' that liquid gold, kid.
