anybody still using a Tomei M7960?

looking for people who've had first hand experience/results. would like build specs and dyno results if possible.

need to dump my stock 8 turbo in the near future, and for $1300 that Tomei looks hard to beat, considering it costs around $800 to rebuild and install a stock IX where i live...

You are probably better off getting a FP 71HTA which goes for $1400.

because they wanted bigger power or because the M7960 is genuinely no good?

if they wanted bigger power, that makes sense. shouldn't have bought a 400hp turbo and expected 500+ out of it. if they replaced the M7960 due to poor quality, premature failure, etc, thats a different story.

im looking at it as a viable option vs just upgrading to an Evo 9 turbo. by the time i find a decent IX unit, rebuild it, and add required install stuff and such, i figure i'll have $800 in it. if i go with an FP Green(which is what was recommended by the tuner per my goals), or an EF3, BBK Lite, i'll have $2K+ wrapped up in it. the Tomei is about $1300 ready to roll.

im a firm believer in "you get what you pay for", and i try not to buy junk, but if the Tomei will meet my 400-450whp and quick spooling needs, i can spend the extra $700 on a new intercooler.

which leads me to my next topic.... lol

I still have my ARMS turbo. A lot of people on here will tell you to get a FP or BBK. Tomei turbos never really took off here because most people want max HP VS balance. I seen people with the M7960 make between 390-460 HP. One thing I would say is if you do get one, look to get the biggest diameter LICP, DP, high flow cat, catback, 3.5" IC, SRI, and exhaust mani. This turbo does not like restriction! It took a while to find parts that would let the turbo spool the way it wants to, which is from mid RPMs all the way to redline!
One thing I like about Tomei, is ALL the turbo parts are available for purchase! Some of the other turbos out there won't sell you parts I.E. you need a new CHRA..and they tell you to buy another turbo.

Good luck!

7960 is no powerhouse and has a tendency to surge.

All in all, 2/10 would not bang.

I can understand the problem of it tends to surge, but I don't know what you mean by "it's no powerhouse". Compared to what? How would you rate it compared to a stock IX turbo? Or an FP Green?

I talked to my friend who had this turbo on his old setup and he said that this turbo is like the stock Evo 9 turbo no power at all its like a wasting of money .
If i were you I would get MAP EF2.5 over this **** ..

Good luck my friend ..

The most I have gotten out of that turbo is 379whp with S2s, full exhaust, big intercooler, SD, etc. I can do that with a stock turbo with the same mods.

I get the impression this is a hit or miss turbo. Actually, mostly miss.
