Question about Evo Mods

I just got my evo, and so far I have ordered a TT and oil catch can. I was going to buy a 3" exhaust next, but after searching the forums and reading different posts, I'm wondering if I should just save and buy some kind of engine managment. I know with turbo cars, any mod can make a change in the A/F ratio. I was going to add the exhaust then get the ecu, but I dont want to cause any issues with the motor leaning out since I' autox alot. So should I get the ecu first, or will the exhaust be ok on its own? Then next purcahse be the ECU Right now i'm leaning towards the AEM EMS.

thanks in Advance

IMO - I would go ahead with the exhaust then go for a custom flash.

you could also add a boost controler and the dynoflash it, it will give at least 20whp if boost is set to 20psi, btw:the EVO runs a bit rich from factory especially above 5000 rpms

I konw they run rich, and I have read that the boost bleeds off at high rpm, does a boost controller fix this??? I dont plan on upping the boost to much at least with out a standalone ecm

You will still run rich even with the turboback exhaust. That's why the SAFC or Flash should be one of the next upgrades to further lean it out and extract max HP. Or you could leave it and carry a bottle of windex around to wipe the black soot from your rear bumper.

Yes a Boost controller will hold till redline what ever you set it at. I would definetly get the exhaust first. A cat back alone gave me 14 whp over stock. But if you go with downpipe and high flow cat or cat delete you will need either a re-flash or some type of standalone(Autronic,AEM,Utec) or piggy back(Xede,SAFC, to get the max from these additions for A/F adjustments

You don't need a standalone to safely up the boost. I am running 20-21 psi using a MBC, and I have a 3" turbo-back with an open element air filter. With those mods I'm still pulling fuel out via an emanage. I should zero out the emanage and see what the af goes to sometime. I'm guessing maybe 10.5:1 or richer.

Hope to see you around at some of the autox events.

As mentioned before a custom tuning is a very nice place to start paired with a 3" turboback 300whp is very attainable. For me I'd go out and pick up an EBC, either the Blitz SBC-id or the HKS EVC both very capable units which give you consistent hands off boost control. Also from recent developments a fuel pump upgrade with any of the above seems to be a cheap and advisable modification.

You can get a ton of mods for the price of the AEM EMS. You can get at least a Buschur Stage 2 package that will result in about 343whp at 19psi. Check out http://www.buschurracing.com/EVO_Stage2.html

I'm in the same boat as CarFanatic. I am looking to purchase a 3 inch turbo back and MBC (set at 19 psi). I would like to keep the warranty (i will remove all mods before I visit the dealer).

Will I see any significant power increases with a 3 inch turbo back and MBC (19psi) and NO tuning? any drivability issues??

If you plan on getting serious with the car latter and making big figures you may as well go for the new ECU now. There are many very good pieces of kit out there and because they are adjustable they enable much better maps to be created than what the standard ECU can support. They often have additional features, such as anti-lag that are good. You can even get self “learning” units that will adapt to minor mods that you do and customise them selves to your driving style (slightly scary but cool). At the end of the day, are you prepped to mod everything else and then leave the only thing controlling the whole lot stock? Not a good idea. Personally I would go for the exhaust first, then a filter, and then start on the stand alone. This will give you the best power, reliability and drivability.

First off, thanks to all info thus far, takes me a bit to understand a new car.

As Far as boost controlers go, In m old civic I ran a greddy, but I had issues with boost creep, I think alot had to do with my waste gate that was on the car. Which is the best option in the form of EBC?

As far as the fuel pump, I'm guessing most people are running a walborro? which model and do u need a fuel pressure regulator, or are the mits a returnless fuel line?

I have also heard about rewiring the fuel pump what exactly is this about?

thanks
