Linked Intercooler Piping Clamps?

Can anyone tell me what those linked clamps on either side of the intercooler piping coupler is? I'm guessing its supposed to ensure you don't blow two sections of piping apart. I really don't think its necessary, I'm just kind of of wondering.

they call those "Piping Stoppers" and Blitz makes them. I've seen them on rhdjapan.com for ~$75 bucks. The idea is that if you blow a coupler, you don't smash your pipes into your hood, which, I have done.
