So at what point is it absolutely needed or would I see any kind of big gains with head porting? I'm sure even now I would see gains but would it really be worth it without having a good build to really back it up?

 

Yes I think when people overlook porting the head they are dum. A motor is an air pump and if you get the right head porting and raise the cfm's your head flows while keeping good(high) sir vilosity. Your gonna notice big gains as you do more and more to your build. My father when he was alive was amazing at porting he did everything by hand, he did my k20 gt35r setup on meek hatch and I picked up 80hp after the porting. But I was running 12psi on a gt35r

I think that is only needed when you fit a big turbo with a lot of lbs/min, big valves,...

On the other hand you can obtain gains with small turbos too

 

So I'm assuming this isn't an extremely common mod really then?
