Shredding serpentine belts

Hey All,

Need a little help on this. Bought the car last year. Rebuild the motor. Got it running earlier this year. The belt that was on the car when I bought it looked okay, so I ran it. It gave me a couple hundred miles before it shredded. I chalked it up to probably being an old belt since I didn't know the history.

I was short on cash so I bought the "cheap" belt from the parts store. Lasted me about 200 miles. Shredded on the outside again. Same way as the first. The parts store was nice and warrantied it even though they told me there was a pulley problem. Well, it's shredded again and I can't keep going through them like this

Checked all my pulleys. Water pump (new) spins fine. Alternator spins fine. Tensioner and idler pulleys are fine. A little loose, but nothing that should shred a belt. Crank pulley has no chips.

Power steering pump is my thought. When watching the belt (before it shreded) I could see a little movement of the pulley in and out while at idle. When revving, it goes away. I was in about 2 hours of traffic on Tuesday and am wondering if all the wobbling at idle is what killed me.

Would a little shaft play on the PS pump cause me to shred belts? The pump is quiet. Has about 83k on it.

Any thoughts would be great. I can't afford to just throw a lot of money at this blindly.

Brady

I found a rebuild kit for the PS pump. I'll get it in and do a writeup.

I hope that fixes your problem. When I bought my car I had the same problem. Turns out the previous owner installed what appears to be a lancer alternator. The pulley was slightly narrower than an evo alternator pulley. I bought just the pulley and swapped it. Haven't had the problem since and its been about 4 years now.
