6 speed transmission help

after digging around this forum and the internet in general, i really cant find a definitive answer to this question. How much power can the MR manual 6 speed handle? I'm looking for both built and stock numbers assuming an aftermarket transmission cooler were installed and the car didn't get the s*** kicked out of it constantly (not that it wont be driven spiritedly). I do ALOT of highway driving so a 5spd isn't really a viable option for me.

Some people mention 400hp as the absolute limit. Torque is more likely where it is at.

See TRE's website: http://www.teamrip.com/TRE_6SPEED_EV...20SERVICE.html

And then there's heat. Transmission cooler seems like a great idea if you run more than 3 hot laps in a row from what I understand.

I've been hearing they do a decent rebuild. also looking for something i can pretty much daily, what does your torque curve look like? IS that kind of the limit for whats considered "safe"?

Torque is not the big killer of these, heat is. Thats how road course guys kill it with 300wtq or less. And there are drag guys running 10s with it. So depends how you use it.

A THOUSAND TIMES!!

I'm at 330/300 and frequently road course it. No cooler installed and it destroyed the bearings from excessive heat.
Trans is currently at Shep's to get a rebuild.

After I get it back i'll be aiming for 350wtq.

Plan on building a cooler system if you are pushing power with the 6-spd.

Eh. I was doing hot laps for full 20 minute back-to-back HPDE sessions at ~330awhp and the transmission is just fine. My HKS turbo on the other hand... had its wastegate flapper warp and break from the heat.

What transmission fluid did you use? Did you make sure you had the proper fill?

I know that heats a big issue with them, which is why i mentioned the addition of an aftermarket cooler already because i know its necessary. What is it exactly that these road course guys are doing thats blowing the trans up? hard downshifts?

Haven't bought one yet. Still in the midst of deciding exactly what I'm getting for a new car. What kind of torque limits are you seeing on builds?

The thinness of 4th gear compared to the 5 speed + excessive heat build up on track, combined with .7 quarts less fluid than the 5 speed = KABOOM!

Redline MT-90

I had roughly 6 track events this year, and most days were 6-8 sessions.
After time, it does take a poop due to the heat. I found out the fun way.

I dont track mine so in a road course situation deeman101 would know better than I. But again give TRE a call and talk with John he will tell you exactly what you should do. I run a HTA35R so my curve is slow and rises, sorry I dont have a pic on my PC, but any big turbo chart will show that.

Again TQ is what I was warned about. If you need a core though talk with John he has some last time I spoke with him, or even I have one from my build.

Yes, torque kills lots of things. However, the only 2.3 quarts of fluid this transmission uses means there is almost 1 less quart to absorb/disperse heat than the 5 speed. Someone was doing temp taking at the track, and the fluid reached (IIRC) 290+ degrees.

That is not good.

When my trans was taken apart, people who looked at it said the trans temp must have exceeded 300+ by a good amount. Still waiting to hear from Shep how much damage he can see. lol
