VIII 9.8cm billet 20g upgrade?

anybody still doing this? i have been looking at upgrading my turbo and stumbled on turbolabs of america offering a billet "20g" compressor upgrade for $400 including a rebuild. im thinking if i go that route then have it shipped to Buschur or someone to port it, i should be able to hit my 400whp mark

they also offer a 10.5 hotside conversion with a tdo6h4 turbine and upgraded billet compressor wheel for $700, but i think that may be overkill, plus adding lag and additional parts to make it fit.

any constructive criticism is welcome, but only from those who have done this or have a great reason not to. if i could buy an FP Green/BBK/EF turbo i would. its just not in the budget.

If you had a IX turbo then the bargain priced FP 71HTA would be a great option.

I never heard of that turbo shop that you mention either nor have I read any user reviews or seen any dyno results. I would stick with an established 16G-experienced shop(MAP, Blouch/CBRD, FP).

If I was on a limited budget looking for 400WHP, I would pick up a used IX turbo and buy some injectors and convert to E-85.

Once you have the IX turbo you can do an upgrade further down the road.

a billet 20g mated to stock turbine will not be any better than hta 71 or ef1. both of which are a much better idea for 250 extra.

Agh I forgot to mention E85 isn't an option for my location. Only one place nearby sells it, and that's 20mi away.

Also, I was under the impression that I'd need an evo IX turbo in order to upgrade to a 71hta? Which means I would also need 9 install kit as well?

I bought a 20g extended tip billet compressor wheel and a machined compressor housing from those guys. I rebuilt a IX turbo with those parts and put an upgraded shaft (inconel) as well with a total rebuild kit and then I had it balanced professionally. It spools fast as hell and is an obvious upgrade to my stock IX turbo I was using before. This 20g set up will definitely make more power then the stock turbo but its not a huge or crazy jump in power. Which I was okay with because I DD my IX and don't need 650hp on it lol. As far as turbo labs I thought they were very professional and up front about realistic power goals for what I was doing and Ian there was a pleasure to deal with. If you want a nice bump in power without going ***** out I think the 20g set up is a great choice and ppl have been putting 20g's in Evo's since way back in '03 with great success. If you're going to do this I would DEFINITELY use the hot side from a IX turbo though (10.5) to see better overall results.

so you're suggesting i upgrade to the 10.5 hotside and have the "20G" compressor wheel fitted? this would be a VERY cost effective upgrade. at what RPM do you start building boost and where do you make peak boost?

It starts spooling around 2000 RPM and I can hit 28psi around 3300 RPM respectfully. Varies with outside temperature but overall I am very happy with the performance of this set up. I have a perfectly good extra IX turbo with 50k miles on it if you want it. I'd let it go for pretty cheap.
