difficulty shifting in cold weather
difficulty shifting in cold weather
hey guess, i recently notice that im having a little difficulty shifting from gear to gear and sometime even having a hard time putting into gear (mostly first gear), but this only happen in the morning when the temperature is around 30-40 degree here in Texas. During the summer it shifts real smooth, but lately i feel that the temperature has made a different in how i shifts and put into gear. Could it be my transmission fluid or transfer case fluid? The car transmission system was flush at 30k miles with ams fluid, and i also have underhood bushing, base bushing, and short shifter. I know that 30 degree isnt that cold compare to the upper states but just wondering if anybody have experience the same problem when driving in the morning? thank in advance for the help and in input guys!!!!
i am having the same problem i came out side to go to work after i had started the car for 15 min and had problems shifting into gears until the transmission warmed up granted it was -2 degrees this morning.
What you are experiencing is simply due to the fact that the oil is cold and thus "thicker". Unless you are using the wrong weight oil this is nothing to be concerned with.
It doesnt matter if you let your car sit and idle to warm up as that will have no affect on the transmission warming up. While the car is still warming up just be conscious of this and dont do any spirited driving until everything is up to temp.

This will go over what fluids you should be running in your drivetrain. According to jacks they prefer the oem fluids regardless of any hp/tq level and temp. However, if you are still having issues they do also recommend for cold conditions you can use MT85. MT90 for a year round fluid.
If you have used the wrong fluids in your tranny. Then I recommend you do the following:
Fill the tranny with ATF the reason why is it is very thin and contains many detergents that will clean your tranny of all the wrong fluids. Then drive the car up to normal operating temp, perhaps around the block a couple times. Then drain it and then fill with ATF again. This time drive it around a bit. Maybe a round trip to do an errand or something. Then drain it again and fill with the appropriate fluid.
