Exclamation Thermostat question

Fellow tuners, can someone please tell me the importance of a thermostat? Also, would it be safe to run my EVO VII without the thermostat? I assume that without the thermostat, the engine should run cooler as the water pump keeps the water constantly circulating. Could this be potentially dangerous for the engine? The only time I could see the thermostat being useful is during inital start up when the engine is cold. But this can be overcome by letting the engine warm up for a few minutes before driving. I live in the Tropics so it does not get cold here. Thermostats are mainly needed for vehicles in cold climates. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks in advance for your kind responses.

this thread talks a little about it. i remember i ran my old car without a thermostat and it ran cooler than it did with it in but i can't say if that was a smart thing to do or not. hope this helps a little.

no-no don't remove the thermosat, if an engine runs at too low a temperature, it is inefficient, the oil gets dirty (adding wear and subtracting horsepower), deposits form, and fuel mileage is poor-- not to mention exhaust emissions! For these reasons, the cooling system is designed to stay out of the action until the engine is warmed up

I could understand removing the heater core--why but you still need the thermostat unless you are going to get a heating blanket to warm it up a few hundred degrees before starting!! (my click and clack smartass answer!)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I really wouldn't suggest doing that. It would cause more problems than good, some of which WIdealer stated. I am sure there are plenty of real mods that you can choose from for your Kick A** EVO. Good Luck and Hoped the input from people helped.

Trini,

i too live in the tropics and it never gets below 28C. here. You can pull your thermostat but it doesn't really make a difference because I don't think you will save much weight and given the outside temp. the water pump will be running anyway.

Are you running an uprated oil-cooler? These help alot. Was the first thing I did after taking the car to the track for the first time.

Running a car with no thermostat has both pros and cons.

Pros: 1) A cooler engine will produce more horsepower especially in a turbo vehicle as long as the air fuel ratios are not too rich.
2) It works great for a car at the drag strip when you are waiting in line to race because your car will run cooler as you are idling at the line.

Cons: 1) If you live in an area which is hot, like where I live, the car will overheat without a thermostat. YES IT WILL!!! It is true that it will take much longer for the coolant to heat up because it is always circulating, but once it hits operating temp, it will continue to rise.

Why???? Have you ever watched the coolant rush through the pipe with the cap off. It moves pretty fast even at idle once the car is warmed up. Imangine how fast it travels at 3000 RPM. If you are on the freeway, the coolant is in and out of the radiator so quickly that it never has a chance to cool the antifreeze down. Every time the coolant circulates in and out of the engine, it keeps getting hotter and hotter. You will start to see the needle go higher and higher. The only way to cool the motor down now, is to put the tranny in nuetral so that the water pump slows down and the coolant stays in the radiator longer. When place it back in gear, the gauge will drop back to normal or may even go below normal.

The thermostat is always opening and closing once the engine hits operating temp to slow down the flow of coolant in the engine. Thus allow time for the coolant to cool down in the radiator. The main job of the thermostat is still to warm to car up as quickly as possible, but without one, once you reach the desired temp, it is there to keep it at that temp.

Thank you

Thank you very much for your informative response. It does make alot of sense. My guage does fluctuate depending on how hard I drive. Thanks again.
