Another whine thread video inside

Okay everyone, I just bought this car. This is my second Evo, the first was an 03 with low milage. So I didn't have any weird whines yet. I notice that the whine only starts at about 50MPH gets slightly louder with more speed and pitch changes with speed. It only makes noise when very lightly on the gas to maintain speed. If I slightly accel or let off it goes away. while in the car with the windows down it almost sounds like the whine is coming from the passenger side near the rear of the car.

I am assuming I am getting early T case whine, or even rear diff.

any input is appreciated

-Mike

Its hard to guess where sound is originating on video, but that sounds sort of how my rear diff is sounding. Mine is really obviously coming from the rear of the car, a really high pitch whine above 30 mph or 4th gear above 2200 rpm. At speeds above 55-60 mph it turns into what almost sounds like a police siren. The in cabin noise on mine is seriously getting unbearable, and unfortunately its a dd.

One way to get a better feel is put the car on jackstands so all the tires are safely off the ground. Have someone run the car until you can isolate the noise from underneath.

Transfer case noise is usually more pronounced than that. I had an 03 and when my tcase started to go it just became really loud at 60 mph one day. The noise your getting sounds like mine when i had poly bushings installed on the mustache bar. It sounds like a tcase whine but much lower.

Yeh I kind of have the same whine as Tommi, and I presume you're experiencing the same thing... I've driven many Evos with the same whine, it's normal (IF that whine was determined to be coming from the rear that is).

So I drained the T case and rear diff. The t case was clean and rear diff was thick and muddy. Also came topped with a nice of a few metal shavings on the magnet. The new fluids did quiet the car down all around but the whine is still there at 50-65Mph.

After listening to that video more it does sound very much like mine, although mine is louder. It also does seem to come from the rear diff. Im starting to think my issue was that I may have let the rear diff sit with no fluids in it for a little too long and possibly have oxidation inside. I have no other ideas as to how this whine developed since it didn't have it before it was stored.

I have the same whine from the rear diff. It will only make the noise in 5th gear and cruising around 50-60mph. If I put the car in netrual at the same speeds there is no whine.
My assumption: the whine is generated from the vibrations up front (twin disk clutch & solid lower motor mount)...
I'm sure the whine isn't anything to worry about but I would also like to know the exact reason for the noise. It's very obnoxious.

I just installed a whole bunch of bushings and now my car makes that same noise at ~3300RPM or ~70MPH in 5th gear.

Because racecar.

See I don't know exactly what the history of mods are on this car. I know the obvious and what was giving to me in receipts from the last owner none of which include mounts or bushing of any kind.

I am not to sure what the cause of the sound is. At this time I am thinking I am just hearing wear from the diff since the fluid I drained out was pretty nasty. It was possibly only changed a couple of times in the cars 105k life span.

I would drive it on a lift. Use a stethoscope to just to get a better idea.
