P0335/P0340 codes.

I am having an issue with a car throwing these codes. The car starts and runs. Cranks and fires fine. But these codes come on right away. I changed the cam sensor and the ECU and verified the position of the Cam sensor rotor on the camshaft. Everything appears fine. I also looked over the wiring for the crank sensor and everything is intact. Could a dirty or corroded sensor cause this issue? I am going to pull the timing covers today and check the crank sensor but they are a pita to change and I have heard the car won't start with a bad crank sensor.

Any ideas?

Well I scoped the signals from the sensors and they weren't dropping out or anything. You could see the wave forms perfectly. I cant figure this out.

This says a bad starter or a weak battery can cause this. I had a bad starter with a welded short on it and it didn't cause an issue. I also jump started it because it states low battery voltage can also cause it.

Any chance the trigger plate for the crank sensor is damaged? Is the cam rotor an original 8 one and not one from a 4, 5 or 6?

When you use a USDM 8 rom on an earlier EVO (6 and below) you get cam/crank codes even though the car will start and drive fine. You don't get them with the JDM ROMs though. This shouldn't be your issue though.

What was changed when the issue came up?

The only time my car set a code for crank position sensor, I was parking on a hill, the rpms dropped and the engine shook really hard and died before I could clutch all the way in. Engine light came on checked it and it was ckp and map sensor. Erased it and it never came back.

The car didn't run for a long time when I reassembled it. However you are correct that the rotor is an older one. If it is slightly different and that causes a synch issue then that is probably the problem. The original cam sensor was lost over a long period of time and mutliple moves of the car.

Thank you very much! I won't be able to test this until I get a new rotor. Probably next Sunday I will have it installed.

The older rotor is definitely your problem.
