Would you build this head??

These pictures are of a head that I was going to build.
I will comment more after I get some feedback from everyone.

If you were going to build a head for $2500 would you use this core??

The caps came with it.
The issues that are in question are in that area though....hint, hint...

i looks like the journals have been line honed because of the cross hatching or am i seeing something different? Or is scoring from trash in the oil?

Bingo!

It seems as though there was trash in the oil and then someone crudely honed the journals. Also, they found RTV in the cam seals and on the head showing that someone was having issues getting the seals to stay sealed.....due to the honing of the cam journals.

This head is one I purchased to have built buy GSC. When they received the head to build they called me to let me know and see what I wanted to do. I payed $725 shipped for a bare head (I know this was overpaying....).

SO, my questions is.....Would you still build this head at a $2500 cost??

Issues that are caused by this are:
1. Incorrect valvetrain geometry
2. Blowing cam seals constantly.

The camshaft rides in a pressurized atmosphere just like the Rod and Main Bearings. If the clearance is out of spec., you will have the same issues as the Rod and Main Bearings that are out of spec. Those include low oil pressure, excessive oil in the head and the Camshaft not following the eccentric it was designed to. Also the Bearing diameter will enlarge from metal to metal contact without the oil cushion that is supplied by the oil pump in a properly sized Bearing to Camshaft clearance.

The only way to verify the head is not scrap metal is to measure and see if it meets factory tolerances.

And this is why I love your posts.....
It's like you don't even read what is asked. I thank you for pointing out the obvious, however I just asked a few simple questions which you didn't even address.

Yeah, well I sold an "undamaged head" so I am not going to spend $2500 building this head. The guy I bought the head from is reluctant too offer a refund as yet. He thinks the head is still useable. As it might be useable I don't want to spend $2500 to build this head and have issues later. This head was shipped directly to GSC from the seller and they contacted me before doing anything to the head as they were concerned about it.

I ask again, if you were in my situation.....would you build this head?

YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE A COMPREHENSION PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!

I WILL SAY IT AGAIN

What a joke. You asked a question and Roadrunr gave you a sensible answer and this is how you respond? What did you expect? Based on a few crappy photos someone is going to be able to determine that the head is perfect? The fact that GSC were skeptical should tell you something.

Pay them to get it checked for you. If it doesn't check out or they can't check it for you don't risk the $2500.00

I get it. The whole point of this thread is to get a bunch of "no don't use it" responses so you can put pressure on the seller for a refund.

HAHA.

I understand what you are saying and comprehend!!
Since you are experienced in this field would you spend the money to build this head even if it was within spec given the way the surfaces look and also the fact that whoever was using this head obviously had problems getting the cam seals to seal?

I am unsure if is within spec right now but even if it was would you except this as a core that was supposed to be free of damage?

No...but i might suggest you have GSC measure for tolerances . That way you have ammunition for getting the seller to have to take it back.

No, actually I was looking for other honest opinions. I am not going to use this head since I don't want to build something that will give me any issues. If I am going to spend $2500 I would like to ensure everything will be good to go and have no worries.

That is the whole point. Do you think GSC would have contacted me if they thought everything would be in spec? Exactly.
The seller wants to speak with GSC again but at this point I just want a refund and to start looking for a new head that I can build. At this point I bought a head that was supposed to be free of damage so I believe what I should get a refund as there definitely was damage.

I get it, Don posted what you will see if you read a shop manual. That information is helpful but most of his posts are like that. I actually respect his opinion, it is obvious that his extensive experience is helpfull.

See how that works.....I addressed the things that you questioned.

Yes, they were going to measure but they called me. They thought I sent them the head from my car.
At this point even though it could be within spec I would still like my money back as I bought an undamaged head

Actually, I am a walking Shop Manual. I am a Retired Automotive Instructor

I state the facts for a reason, you still do not know if the head is usable without the measurements of the Camshaft Bores.

The proper way to measure them is with a Dial Bore Gauge. A Snap Gauge or Plastic Gauge is an alternative. Any competent Automotive Machine Shop will be able to perform this test to verify the head is usable.

If the head was already measured and has been honed beyond the maximum clearance, then it is a boat anchor
