i got the p0401 code and i am EXTREMELY frustrated with it. i checked for loose or missing hoses, none. however the hose that goes on the nipple that sticks out downward (not toward pass side) has been extended using a vacuum hose coupler thingy. lol. could this be the problem? i also have an aem truboost that i'm ditching and putting the car back to stock. can the truboost be the culprit since the wastegate solenoid is called "emission solenoid 4" by mitsu? it is bypassed currently with a vacuum line looped from both nipples and is still plugged in. the car has 41k miles so i really doubt its the egr valve or egr solenoid someone please help! thanks.

Awesome long running and still useful thread! Back from 2004 and still helping out. I got this the other weekend coming back from Vegas. Got home checked light using tactrix and came upon this thread and fixed within 20 secs!

Ps to above posts, I read the entire thread and some where back around mid thread should answer your questions... Pics available!

Easy fix for me fortunately.

I'm another one that had the Vacuum hose hanging off the EGR valve. I almost just ordered the part instead of checking first; glad I did.

This thread is the best. helped me find exactly how to approach this issue in the least amount of time.

I also took a video with my phone for those who require a visual... fast fwd to 0:37 & you can see the double vacuum lines

Hate to revive an old thread, but.... I ran into p0300 (random misfire) and 0401 (egr clogged/malfunctioning). I'm getting a fairly rough idle. WOT performance is frightening. it feels like it has a fuel cutoff at 5-6K. I changed the spark plugs (but not the coils/wires yet. The dealership can only order them tomorrow) After Reading this thread I decided to tinker with the EGR instead.

I found the disconnected vacuum line, connected it. I didn't ziptie it yet, but It hasn't come off since i've connected it. I'm still getting a rough idle and misfiring. I haven't reset the codes yet.

Today I'm probably gonna remove the valve, clean it with carburetor cleaner and ziptie the vacuum hose. I traced the hose and the other end is snug and tight.

Any other suggestions? Maybe it could be the coils/wires?

its 99% of the time the EGR vacuum hose being disconnected or the EGR itself....you need to reset the codes.....

Does anyone know how long/miles it takes for the evo ECU to be "Ready" ? I need to do NYS inspection currently my code clearer reads its only in yellow state...

I am having the same issue but the P0401 code kicked in after about 60 miles. I need to get to 100 before getting an inspection. I think if a egr hose was disconnected, it would show sooner. Anyone have any idea's what it could be? Should I clean out the egr?

Perhaps this was covered already, but I got bored trying to read through 200+ posts.

I also am getting the P0401 code, but my EGR system has been removed. Is there a way to remedy this?

Cool, thanks. I thought maybe something wasn't completely removed/disconnected during my EGR removal.

Got the P0401 code and found the hose facing down had blown off. Could that cause the car to have a rough idle. After driving for about 20 minutes when I come to a stop the idle is rough almost to the point of stalling, which it does do sometimes. Just wondering if the loose hose could cause this or if it is completely unrelated.

Revisiting this thread - I'm once again getting the P0401, except the hoses are all attached. Please advise.

I'm having the same code, everything connected. I'm guessing our problem lies elsewhere, not just a vacuum hose.
