Re: Break-In
I third this. My car got faster the more miles I put on it AFTER I went through the break in procedure.
The Evo is a fast car but if you are expecting it to keep up with a supercharged Mustang or such on the highway, you bought the wrong car. This car is made to eat up anything on a back roads with curves or off the line up to about 60-70 mph. Take it to a track and if you know how to drive you'll know just how "fast" the car really is.

I'm not sure I'd goes as far as to say the Z06 sucks at handling. That is a pretty fine car (but still costs 15-20K more than the Evo).

Alot of stupid statements on here.
The STOCK Evolution is not tremendously powerful. Those who have netted low 13's stock are using AWD to its full potential. It's a 2.0L engine, its never going to make lowend V8 torque. To those who comment about Z06's and 690Hp Cobra's... Don't comment about cars you have never driven or "what the 100K Norris Design's" car runs. The evolution is a great car, can be had for under 30K, it has 4 doors, all wheel drive and a nice feel--but it's not a Z06. Nor is it going to hang with a Cobra in a straight line, mod's are cheap and torque is plentiful. The Z06 does 11's stock BTW.

ive seen 13 z06's run ata cecil, and cecil is the fastest track in the usa pretty much from what ive heard, never seens an 11 sec z06, there was a rep from chevy there one night with a lap top tunning and was hitting 12.2, so dont bring that in here...
got it 4 days ago? did they give you a full tank?
CHEAP *** GAS my friend, mine did the same thing for the first tank, after that I put 93 and kaboommmm, new beast came to life.
also as you get more millage the car will run better and better. Just wait and enjoy.

Evil, you're right about a stock EVO being a little slower than its hype, especially after 5000 rpm. I posted a message just like yours on dcevoclub right after I broke 400 miles and ran the car hard for the first time. It's still a nice car but powerwise its not a supercar, at least not in stock form. It's pretty good for $30k though and plenty of folks make them faster through mods. Here is the post I made last August. I had a Z06 before the EVO.
"I've been pretty good about the break-in but I finally got over 500 miles and couldn't resist pushing a couple of gears WOT to redline. I am a little dissapointed. I was getting a real strong mid-range urge during the break-in, even at less than full throttle and I was hoping to see a whole lot more with WOT and higher revs. Not so. The mid range pull kind of levels off instead of increasing as you get above 5500.
The good 1/4 mile times in the magazines must be coming from a strong launch (I'm holding off for fear of clutch damage) rather than brute power.
This thing doesn't come close to Corvette power."

That said, a piggyback and a full exhaust really does wonders for the Evo...
I agree with some of the other statements, the Evo's excellent suspension "soaks up" a bit of the seat-of-the-pants feel, BMWs are good at this, so it feels "slower". Getting a good, non-abusive AWD launch is difficult and takes gentle practice, much more difficult than RWD, a bit harder than FWD. Compared to typical "americanized" power curves the Evo feels slow down low - no giant torque curve. Even stock the Evo can be wrung out up top. My break-in consisted of bedding the brakes, taking some of the squirm out of the tire tread, doing a break-in of the clutch, quick revs close to redline, basically driving it how I wanted. I make 239whp with just a K&N panel, just a bit above average. I keep my oil fresh because I like reving it close to fuel cut (7800rpm) on the freeway, makes for great top end, the car will start to pull again after 7K, puts you nicely in the next gear for top end stuff. Learning to drive the car while stock will give you an excellent idea of its potential for speed and how to use the engine/ecu management the way the factory intended. Of course, huge mod changes start the learning curve all over again. My Evo got faster up top after about 11K miles. Fuel and weather conditions play an enourmous role in a stock Evo's performance. I've gone from "this sucks" to "holy sh*t!", on the same roads everyday, but different fuel and weather.
The evo is not, by any means, slow. But its not a drag car. Also, the car doesn't really start to pull until the turbo kicks in at 2900 rpm. Like everyone has said. Break it in. Put good gas in it and see how you like it in optimal conditions. If you're still not happy, look at the mods in my sig and bolt those on. Best of luck to you.

I just want to know why people think and keep talking about cobras and vetts like they are the ultimate **** on the road
(not saying that they are POS) but they just cant do it for me sorry.
c'mon peps, drive and mod the hell out of your evos and enjoy the ride. back in 85, I come from 4cyl turbos to v8s and now back to 4cyl turbos, nothing like a smooth turbo 4 beating the hell out of "american muscle" cars.
