install gsc valve springs and retainers with head OFF the car?

Is there any special way to to it this way or do I have to use the compressor with the head on the block still? Any advice will help. My block is being dropped off to,be built and I want to install my cams and, springs while that build is being taken care of.

its easy with the head off the car. just get the spring install tool, and change the springs out one at a time. its a long process, but really easy. i did all mine with the head on my work bench. be sure to put a towel or something like that on the work bench before you lay the head down. also, when you take the followers off the valve stem, the valve will have something soft to drop onto.

its also a good idea to change out your valve stem seals while you have the springs out. here is the tool for that.

Awesome perfect. The only way I have done it was with the head on the block but this time I won't have it,so,thanks for the response. One question. When the valve falls what's the easiest way to resecure the valve to the retainer?

the keepers are what keep the valve in place. the valve is free once you take the keepers off and will stay free until you are done with the spring and retainer install. once the new spring and retainer are in place, you place the valve back into its full up position, place the keepers back around the valve stem, then loosen the tool. this will seat the keepers around the valve stem and into the upper retainer. the tool comes with a magnetic flat head screwdriver. you use the magnetic end to extract the keepers during disassemble and replace them during re-assembly

it will make way more sense once you actually take the valve assembly apart.

With head off, I just take them to a machine shop. $50, and I don't have to deal with it. That Euro export tool works with the head in the car on the motor, but is far from perfect and kind of pain to use.

Is anyone interested in selling their on-car valve spring install tool, retainer installer, cam lock kit?
