Keeping it simple, you'd want to simply hone the bores, replace bearings and check for wear. You could put in a set of Weisco's and inexpensive H-beam rods and be done with it. I know Aby rebuilds his engines with OEM bearings, because they come in different sizes. And if you want to refresh the head with springs and retainers you can forget about, get the Kiggly beehive springs. They're pricy, but worth it. S2 is a good cam even for for an OEM turbo.
so basically hone the bores, replace bearings even with stock. Weisco's pistons with eagle or low end manley 150mm h-beam forged rods. Have the crank checked, I do want to refresh the heads with new cams s2 and springs. I think that covers it right? and obviously get it tuned afterwards.

so does it complicate things using 156mm rods?

now what about compression what compression should I be looking to get when I change out my pistons. higher then stock or lower to increase boost?

Actually, I looked it up. I think you could run a 156mm rod with a stroker piston with the 88mm OEM crank, but I don't know if they make inexpensive H-beams in 156mm length. Perhaps they do. You can read this thread:

You sure you don't want something that gets a little better gas mileage for that?

Yeah and something not super high mileage might not be reliable anymore.

Head is off heading over to the machine shop tomorrow. Need to start ordering parts. Took off 1 bearing and they look good for 215k miles. Need to finish cleaning the block to check for any warping.

well it seems I might have to pull the motor and do the block also. So I am contemplating buying a short block. What do you guys think? The cost of tearing down the block and then getting it hone and surface. then buy crank rods pistons and bearings. So I am thinking short block any input?

do the Core exchange program
where you send in your used short block with crank etc
they will send you a built one .

Depends on who you want to have do it.

Most cheapest and basic Build for a short block
its like 2.5k with a core exchange and
4.5k with out one

http://www.maperformance.com/maperfo...9-stage-1.html

then there is this one which is way better for power wise
https://secure.buschurracing.com/cat...d5bdc3b4bb7ce8

theres a few other companies that do the core exchange
