FP and CBRD no longer have bolt on turbos - Whats next?

With all the mess of getting turbine housings from Mitsubishi, looks like we don't really have an option for real bolt on turbo anymore.

FP turbos all come with their stainless housing which will require at a minimum their o2 dump kit and an external wastegate (~$500 more and you have to live with an external gate (barf)). Or you can get an o2 eliminator downpipe for $700-800 plus the external wastegate and now you're nearly at $1000 extra. Don't forget the $200 oil line...

CBRD isn't/cant keep making the BBK 3B and have come up with their solution. Technically a bolt on kit, but its FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS! 4 GRAND! FOUR ZERO ZERO ZERO!. A 500hp stock frame replacement should not cost that much but I understand the culmination of parts needed to make that happen.

So what does that leave us? HKS with no US support and MAP EF series (Are these even available anymore?) Anything else out there that might be awesome?

The BB turbos include the oil line. FYI

One could easily do some extra fab work on FP's O2 housing kit to make it recirculate the wastegate. Or sell your current O2 housing a down pipe (for easily $400) and pick up STM's down pipe for the FP housing $650. No matter which route you go, you can sell your stock O2 housing. In the end, the new stainless housing does make the FP turbos a couple hundred more dollars than if they were still a mitsu housing, but the power, and better performing wastegate are worth it. So the FP setup is still very viable IMO..

Look in mrfred "bbk3b my new favorite turbo" thread. They have posted pics of the Evo X kit, and priced it at $4k. And I believe Chad said we can expect the ct9a stuff to cost about the same..

At the price needed to get an FP BB turbo (green most likely) installed now, you're pretty much right back up to the CBRD kits cost. Again, getting into silly prices for one aspect of the car.

Demon, they only have info for the X but I don't expect the CT9A stuff will be any cheaper.

What's going to be the new hotness for a ~500hp fast spooling turbo in the $2000 maybe $2500 range (all said and done)?

Not even close. $2500 turbo, $650 STM down pipe, $250 wastegate = $3400. Sell existing aftermarket down pipe and O2 housing for $400. You're at $3kish...

I haven't been paying much attention to the dyno graphs but how are the new FPs doing for power? When they originally launched I heard they suffered some lag, but that was initial testing.
Honestly if the new setup provides just as good spool as the DBB turbos and more top end. Worth the $$ in my opinion.

I just bought an STM downpipe/O2 housing combo for the stock Evo 9 turbo and they warned me about the turbo situation. Hopefully I can source out a turbo that fits when I'm ready to get one.

This thread is the exact reason why I love the FP 71HTA so much. First reason is it uses the existing hotside already on the car. Second reason is only costs $600 brand new. Third reason is it makes great power and torque and has insane spool.

There is still the JB FP upgrade option if you can get your hands on a stock turbo. Also the EF series is currently unavailable.

FP only does the upgrade if the volute in the hotside isn't cracked. And they're almost always cracked..

Maybe get $150 for selling o2/dp combo but definitely not $400.

I'll break down my cost.
$1099 for JB Red
$200 oil line
$15 manifold/turbo gasket
$40 shipping from FP
$1075 STM recirculated dp w/ WG
$28 ex. manifold/head gasket
$60 custom weld flange to pipe to mod current test pipe
$20 slip fit band clamp
$23 2-bolt flange to mod current test pipe
$5 3-bolt gasket for removing test pipe to mod it
$20 3.25"-3" intake pipe coupler
$25 for misc. gaskets for oil return, new water line bolts, and water line crush washers
+ fresh oil, oil filter, and my off time to cut up my test pipe to fit new dp.
So my total cost is $2610. Not everyone will have to have additional modifications to fit their setups. I didn't add fluid costs into this since they have to be done regardless of what turbo setup is on the car.

if you want to make over 450whp, you're probably better off doing a whole kit so you maximize efficiency and power levels. if not, the stock 9 turbo or even the 71hta is right for the power range/stock looking, and has oem looking factor too. Not to mention those turbos are perfect for the street

Maybe if you have a stock O2 housing and down pipe. I routinely see down 3" pipes sell for $150 on here, and O2 dumps go for 200-300 depending on brand and condition.

I spent the extra $300 to get one of their last MHI housing on my BB red. In retrospect, it would have been a wash to get the stainless housing, and assorted supporting bits, but I needed a turbo to drive the car and didn't want to wait for STM to build the down pipe, and they weren't in stock when I was ordering the turbo.
