New motor and oil

I've just finally completed my evo and am going to fire it up tomorrow to get a couple heat cycles in it. Using brad penn break in oil for the heat cycles. My question is which oil does everyone recommend to run for the car. Keep in mind this car will only be driven mainly in spring/summer/and early fall. The machine shop said about running 10w-40. I know a lot of built motor evos run 20-50 what is the main difference between them besides the thickness on cold and once the motor is warm. what does some experienced evo members recommend.

Thanks

Use what the machine shop recommended they know the tolerances and how the motor was put together. I would run a lighter oil under any circumstances until the motor is broken in-- like the 10-40 recommended by your shop--maybe the 20-50 once its run in, maybe.

No one here can help you unless you have the tolerances that the engine was assembled to, but generally it is better to break in on a thinner weight oil and stay out of boost until you put some thicker oil in, but if your engine was assembled with tight tolerances thicker oil will have your pressure too high.

Rotella T6 Syn. Great Oil. I don't think I know a Turbo Subaru owner that doesn't use it.

Run it in my Forester XT and Veloster Turbo. UOA's from both cars are always money. With Blackstone telling me to send another sample back at 8k miles

I never let oil go that long just for my own preference...

I will always use a 10w-30 in the EVO until the motor is rebuilt. I then will follow engine builders recommendation for oil weight.

Not all rotella T=T6...all I have seen is for turbo diesels. Unclear as to why the spec, I assume its a high detergent. Not sure I would be good with a diesel spec oil in my non diesel until I know up front the difference. For that matter-- If you do know and can speak intelligently on the topic, I would appreciate the education as I am sure others would.

I never understood the reference to build tolerances. I mean there aren't that many different bearings and cranks. Shouldn't oil be determined by type of activity/temperature?

Yeah I think im stick with the 10-40 and go from there my buddy who helpede assemble everything is saying I should run Rotella t6 and that. Said Brad Penn is cheap oil and just use high zinc because it's basically a cheaper oil and needs the high levels of zinc to keep it from breaking down as easy. Also high zinc was meant mainly for flat tapping cams which our cars don't have but I'm no expert.

5w-40 Rotella T6 Syn Blue Bottle perfectly safe for use in your gasoline engine. It does show as a Diesel oil as does M1's 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck oil

Both have a SM rating which are perfectly fine for your gasoline engine. As I said I don't think I know a turbo Subaru guy/gal that does not run it. As do countless folks here

More info than you can possibly read plus countless excellent UOA's over at BITOG and all over web forums.

You'll never have and issue with Rotella T6 Syn in your car ever
