Quick shifting problem?

I am having a problem switching gears above 7000 RPM. When at the track and running hard. The 1st to 2nd gear shift and the 3rd to 4th gear shifts are not able to be made quickly. Anyone else have this problem.

I have the HKS GDmax clutch and the B&M short shifter. I also run Redline tranny fluid. 2 quarts or 75-90NS and 1 quart of MTL.

How do you solve it? Is it normal?

Brian

When going from 1st to 2nd, don't pull straight down. Try pulling to the left a little bit. That helps some people get a smoother shift. I'm not sure about from 3rd to 4th, I've never really had that problem..

The stock shifter/underhood bushings are crap. Try replacing them with some beefier units and that should help a lot. Much more positive engagement.

I am having the same problem. I have an ACT clutch and I have been talking to ACTman about possible solutions and may know more this week or next. It looks like it might be torsional vibration. Put your car in first with the clutch in and rev to about 6500-7000 RPM. If your car wants to nudge forward or move then you might have some trsional vibration at the flywheel and the nudging forward means that the clutch is not disengaging all of the way so the syncros cannot match the output shaft speed to the layshaft speed quickly since the clutch is not completely disengaging. I do not know that this is what is going on yet, but it is a possibility, that is what I am trying to find out.

I have the same exact problem. My gearbox is also notchy as hell. I usually short shift 2nd and just grind it into 4th. Sucks and probably can cost you a lot of time in the 1/4 mile. Short shifting 4th drops me down out of the tq zone so that isn't an option. I have just come to accept this problem as my stealership is in denial when it comes to any problems related to my tranny. They tell me that I should not speed shift and abuse my tranny. Tech always says it feels fine to me and that notchiness is normal.

I have to grind it in to 4th gear as well. It goes in reluctantly, but goes with a grind. I tried to short shift into 4th to see if would shift any better at a slightly lower rpm. But I still had the same problem.

joeycoates: I don't have that problem reving in first gear. My car doesn't try to creep forward any. It just doesn't like to shift into 2nd and 4th at high RPM's. That is the only symtom I have. Other than that the tranny shifts smooth as butter.

Stock clutch, but I can upshift at 7500rpm with zero drama.

I could with my stock clutch as well. But can't since I changed the clutch.

Also when I changed the clutch I switched to the Redline fluid in the tranny. Any of you other guys having this problem running the stock Mitsu tranny fluid?

What about the clutch restrictor? I still have my clutch restrictor in place and the stock clutch fluid line.

I'd cross of potential causes by first lubing the hell out of the shifter "ball" which sits inside of the cup. I put generouse amounts on and it helped relieve some of the notchiness I had before doing so. I also have the B&M, stock bushings, etc. and have no shifting problems (stock clutch however..). The only issue I have is engaging 1st gear in the mornings but that goes away when the tranny fluid gets warm... Oh, also retained the clutch restrictor pill../.

I could shift as fast as I wanted to with the stock clutch. I wonder if the people having this problem are using aftermarket clutches or if there is another similarity?

Has anyone looked at the cable , shifting to 2nd and 4th you are "pushing" on the cable not pulling like when you shift to 3rd and 5th. So iam thinking the cable is binding up some how on quick 1-2 and 3-4 upshifts !! ( IMO)

It is fun isn't it. Has yours always done that? You are still running the stock clutch right? And yours still does it. How about 4th gear?
