Why is it when someone talks abotu stroking the 4G63 in the Evo big $$$$$$ comes up, but it can be done in a DSM cheaply? I know that the Evo is a newer platform, but they are all 4G63's aren't they? I could be way off base here as I am not familiar with DSM's at all, I just thought that they were a similar engine
Many of the expensive stroker kits use custom made forged parts they make themselves not off the shelf parts.

If you want to get a "feel" for the principles involved in turbocharging, a decent book is Corky Bell's Maximum Boost. Its author's company has a web page for it at: http://www.bellengineering.net/Pages...cts_books.html . It's not as technically in-depth as it really could be, but it goes about as far as it can without involving calculus or gasdynamics/thermodynamics equations. You will certainly gain a good look at the big picture and its constituent pieces.

However, understanding turbo systems doesn't get you that far if you don't really understand IC engines. I'd recommend something like Engineering Fundamentals of the Internal Combustion Engine by Willard Pulkrabek for that purpose. You will need to be comfortable with thermodynamics to get the most out of it though.

Though you are in the UK, if you can get access to the series of "Suck, Squish, Bang, Blow" articles written by Mike Kojima and published in Sport Compact Car (a US magazine -- http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/ ), that will probably be good reading for you as well. Mike writes good, thorough technical articles that are quite readable for the average car enthusiast without "dumbing down" the explanations to the point of annoying engineers. He is also very knowledgeable. I believe SCC will be publishing these articles in a book which would be worth having. Turbocharging and forced induction are of course covered.

Don't know what the job market is like in the UK for Mechanical Engineers, but assuming you'll be relatively safe with a real ME (or equivalent/similar such as Aero Eng. or Automotive Eng.) degree, go for it! I'd highly recommend such an education from the perspective of a car guy. While a little knowledge can be dangerous, a lot of knowledge really is power! Do whatever it takes for you to get a good grip on the math (yes, it can be hard, but good teachers and good books help a lot), because it pays off handsomely in allowing you to understand what's really going on.

i have read both the maximum boost book and the sport compact car book with the series of articles written by mike kojima. They are both excellent reads and really explained things really well. Anyways, my question is, what is the stock stroke to rod length ratio for the Evo's 4G63??
