Sweet. Maybe I should get in on that before they change their mind.

One point of clarification for their website - They show the gearset along with an input shaft and the 1,2,6 gears. The $2320 price only covers the Albin's 3,4,5 gear sets.

Curious. Why would it make 1st gear too tall?

Evo gearing is super-short, and I figure with a stroker and mid-sized turbo, the FD would make things pretty ideal.

Steep driveways, pulling away from a stop. Just requires more slippage. If using a street friendly clutch, maybe not too bad. Try asking fireroasted and letsgetitdone. Both have/had taller FD.

I would be a little worried about the final drive. These cars make no torque at the low RPMs you see pulling out from a stop. You would have to really rev it and slip the clutch a decent bit pulling out on a hill with a tall first gear. My last car had a V8 and it took me a while to get used to pulling out on a hill again with the Evo and stock final drive. I was surprised how much gas I had to give it and how it still seemed to want to stall on me. I guess part of that could be tune related though because I was leaning out really bad as soon as the clutch would grab.

It can be a combination of things - tune, flywheel, clutch, gearing. I only need to rev to ~1200 rpm to get my Evo moving. I spent a lot of time tuning that region. Helps to have a near-stock weight flywheel, stock gearing, and an easy-to-engage clutch.

I have the M Factory 4.00fd in my car. I don't have the Shep 6 spd because he wouldn't sell me the gear set w/o him installing it.

Mods: built 2.0, MAP stg. 5 head w/ S3s, FP Blk SS, QM 6 leg w/ 8 leg discs.......

Review: driving my car around town can be a pain...I won't lie. I can't imagine driving my car in a city that has hills like SF and Seattle. I wear out discs too fast already. Taking off from stops or backing into parking spots with my setup can make it look like you can't drive as my wife puts it. I do love cruising in 6th. I built my car for the TX Mile and have no regrets installing the 4.0fd.

Side note my wife has an evo as well.

Most of my issues can be alleviated by using a heavier twin disc clutch.. ie Exedy, smaller cams, smaller intake manifold and 17 in rims. More displacement wouldn't hurt either.

wouldn't it had been easier to just buy a Corvette? i'm being cheeky, not trying to poke fun. but i often wonder why people take some of the world's best-handing cars (evo, fd, s2k, supra, gtr) and set them up for drag and/or top speed events. maybe it's the challenge of taking a car that is built for quick speeds and handling and convert it to something completely different?
i could understand that. i used to drag race FWD cars on drag radials, just for the challenge LOL

Looking to buy another. I don't think I could turn her car into a track car.

:: why not start with a 5spd then? Or didn't you use to run a X SE/MR with paddle shifters?

I drive an Evo 8 with stock gearing. My sister used to live on a mountain right on the edge of Rocky Mountain National park. Driving my WRX to her house was no problem. Taking my Evo up there was a white knuckle clutch blistering experience.

Yes it would have been easier but where is the fun/challenge in that?

My car still handles like it is on rails and on road courses I rarely use 4th.

My next project will be a GM or Mopar resto/pro touring mod.

I'm just itching to get my 2.3 with upgraded 6 speed and 4.09 FD on the road so I can complain about a first gear that's too tall

I'm still debating on whether I should even mess with upgrading my 6 speed or swapping it before I build mine. The car is already down so it seems like a good time to do it but the expense would add a good bit to how long before I get the car running again. Any of you run decent power on a stock 6 speed for a period of time?

Yah used to run an MR at the track. I'm scared of having to replace an expensive transmission. My favorite transmission by far. Second is the 6 speed manual in the CT9A MR. Third is CT9A 5 speed, last, by a wide margin is the CZ4A 5 speed.

We'll see what I can find.
