haha, yeah when I say Mechanic i mean the guys at Mitsubishi.

The guys who did the change got a second opinion from the owner of the dealership who has also had alot of experience with evo's etc and they both said the timing was dead on. But as you said it's still entirely possible something is off or they have missed it. Someone else said that it's possible that even though the timing looks dead on, because I have adjustable cam gears that it may still be off just a little. Although they are neither advanced or retarded in anyway so a little stumped

If the boost leak test is good, I honestly would have someone else look at the timing if you're not comfortable doing it.

If that's "all they did", then timing has to be the issue. Nothing else was touched so that's probably the problem. Not saying other things don't randomly break.

If they didn't move the cam gears then timing should be the same at the head. If you want to get it 100% you need to degree the cams.

Okay man, I see what your saying it makes sense. I just don't know how to tell them that they definitely have it wrong haha. How long would it take them to degree them? Is that something that would a little time consuming?

I think I'm just going to have to get a second opinion on the timing at the end of day as you said.

Just seems weird. Either timing is on, or it's not. You know by looking, it's very simple. Not sure how they could have messed it up. It's two cams and a crank.
They must have messed with something else, even if not on purpose.
Any chance they took the car for a joy ride and hurt something?
I'm grasping at straws here because nothing makes sense LOL
Diagnosing over the internet is hard.

Yeah I know man, its frustrating. No joy rides haha, boost was down even more on the open road today. Felt like it's had its ***** cut off. 10psi max not even 12.5. Its a long weekend here in Nz so nothing they can do till Tuesday so I'm just sitting around twiddling my thumbs. Somebody suggested they check the tension on the belt today. It'll be interesting to see what actually has gone wrong when this all gets sorted.

so you are down on power because you are down on boost? seems if the belt were loose enough to let the timing get that far off, it would jump teeth.

Even when it was on 12.5 psi it didnt feel like it was pulling properly. I doubt 2.5 psi could make the difference I'm feeling, especially in the low rev range. I'm really at a loss at this stage until tuesday/wednesday.

Only other thing I can think of currently is that there is a boost leak somewhere from a loose line / clamp and it's getting looser.

Very much possible. Can you run smoke through it?

I can't really do it myself, I guess I just don't trust my self as i'm quite inexperienced with this kinda stuff, (learning lots though). Plus i don't really have any equipment. Although i did see a video titled "redneck smoke test". He literally put a cigarrete inside a water bottle and taped it to the hose and blew air in the other end with a pump haha. But I'll be asking the guys at mitsi to do a boost leak test. I'm really stumped how it could happen if they hadn't touched any of the stuff related to the boost / intake etc. If she was leaking boost even it can still read high on the gauge right? Or am i wrong there?

you could still reach your target boost, but it would take longer to get to it (lazy spool)

Hmmm interesting. I let my friend drive it, and he said somethings up, so not just in my head. Definitely lost the low end and boost feeling pushing you into your seat. No whiplash like you normally get with an evo when you boost it. Time will tell I guess :/

Small update, but probably not even related (im a bit green with this stuff), but I can hear a little bit of a squeaky noise of some sort from the engine as one of the belts in there rotates. Kinda odd, didn't used to make that noise as far as I know. Related or nah? Thanks for your help btw guys. Learning heaps

So got the cam timing done again, was 2 degrees out, cams were degreed in. Still has poor acceleration. He's running smoke through it tomorrow morning. This is costing a fortune and still can't deduce what the hells wrong with it

SOLVED for anyone who digs this up months later. Was running pig rich air fuel mixtures. Down on compression in one cylinder. Piston ring ****ed. Injector for that cylinder clogged. Also faulty fuel pump.
