Opinion on fp turbo comparison (apples to oranges)

I was originally interested in upgrading to a Mhi red. The spool and hp potential seemed to suit me perfectly. However, due to the lack of availability of the mhi housings, when making my decision I went with the ss green.

My (uneducated) thoughts are the green generally out spools the red by 500 rpm, so the lag of the ss housing would leave my ss green spooling similar to the mhi red. Then up top, the ss green may see similar top end potential as the mhi red due to the better breathing single scroll.

Going one step further, the nice mhi red results Im seeing are with the hta wheel. With the addition of the htz on the green and better flowing open scroll, maybe it will near the potential of the mhi hta red.

So, am I completely wrong in my (apples to oranges) ss htz green to mhi hta red comparison?

The single scroll HTZ green will be close to an MHI hta red, yes. I would still expect it to be a bit lazier for transient response. The 73htz is only 2-3lbs/min shy of the old 76hta. From what I've seen, the single scroll greens are seeing peak boost in the 4250-4500 range in 3rd, which is about where my car hits full boost.

Personally, I am not a fan of FP's move to SS. Thankfully, Blouche and Owen Developments still offer plenty of turbos with the MHI housing.

That's part of the reason I wrote this thread. I see so much dislike for the new SS housing but for all the reasons I wrote above, it seems that it will fit me nicely. But in direct comparison with Mhi red to SS red (or green or black) I can see how the SS isn't favored.

Thanks letsgetthisdone for some data, that's what I was looking for. Kinda wanted to see if I had the right logic.

They have some really good offers right now. None of which were available when I ordered last month. They did have a reman mhi red at the time which is what prompted the debate in my mind but ended up SS green.

As the car comes together I wanted to know if my expectations of the two being similar in some ways were realistic.

It might be a tad less responsive, and it might fall a bit short up top, but it should still be a fun turbo.

The single scroll stainless FP housing is a very good addition to the stock frame setups. The end user benefits the most of the specific housing's A/R on the FP Zero turbo. On a simple bolt on parts setup without focusing particularly and extensively on how to make an fp ss housing turbo spool faster, the SS housing will give slightly higher boost threshold, slower spool time and higher full boost rpm point, but it will make up for it with extra hp due to the more lbs/m it can house and the less back-pressure. Although this is ideal for running a drag setup on methanol, it can definitely be run on a street pump gas setup.

I think I may be the only person to express their dislike of the new housing. Please post results of the Green when you get it on. I'm dying to make a change and don't want to blow money for no reason to have similar results. Top end is not my issue ha.

I do not know if there are any such results posted, but it would be nice if someone did a back to back comparison of an SS vs MHI housings on an fp black, on exact same setup, same dyno, same ambient temps, on pump gas. To give us a baseline of the actual difference.

I will post try to post results after the tune. I couldn't find many SS housing results so maybe it will be helpful to some. The car is pretty basic, stock block with most of the bolt ons. Will be tuned on 93 octane and e85.
