New to the Scene picked up a non running Evo 8

Hey guys and gals,
New to the Evo Scene.
Picked up a non running 03 Evo 8 for a steal earlier this month.
Owner didn't know what was wrong with it, just that it hadn't driven in a year.
Pulled the plugs and #2,3 & 4 are trashed.
The cylinder head and block are likely damaged. I haven't looked at the belt but I think it broke, hence the spark plug damage. Assuming this is an interference engine.

Anyways I'm pulling the engine in my garage with a cherry picker.
I'm finding it hard to find service info, (yes I've used the search tool).
Any advice on pulling the complete powertrain from the top?
Also any shops in the Michigan area that may have a 4G63 Longblock
or are experienced with Evo's?

Just want to restore the car to stock form for now.
My background: automotive engineer working in the Detroit metro area and self taught auto mechanic.

I've pulled the transmission out before, but not the whole assembly...yet. I've seen others do it, and it seems like most have pulled the front clip off and out of the way to pull it through the front. That means recovering the refrigerant first, and draining coolant of course. I hope it's just top end damage for you. As long as the pistons or connecting rods haven't broken and gouged the cylinder walls, you may be able to reuse the block. Good luck, sir.

Pull the front clip off?? It's not removable.

The easiest way is to drop it through the bottom of the car. Pull the transfer case from the gearbox and push it to the side.

If I were you I would pull head first and assess the damage. You may not need to pull the motor entirely.

Yeah Front Clips are usually hacked off hence the JDM front clip conversioncraze.
Not doing that to remove an engine.......
The engine needs a rebuild so the engine has to come out.
I have removed engines by themselves and left the transmissions in the bay.
I'm going to try that approach with this car, seen this done on the 4G63 DSM's so I assume its possible. Can anyone confirm?
Also where do you guys buy rebuild kits, straight from the dealer?

Ha! News to me. Explains how I didn't know since I haven't done it yet! Guess I've seen too many people do a front end conversion, then, unbeknownst to me.
I'm not too sure you can pull the engine and leave the trans in the car, since there's barely enough room to put a timing belt on in the car. The distance required to clear the transmission input shaft from the pressure plate likely isn't available with the transmission still installed.
Anyone with experience on this care to enlighten?

MAP has rebuild kits, too, but with aftermarket/upgraded components. Your call, of course.

Check the belt to see if it really is broken. If it is bore-scope the cylinders. Like others have said, it may only need head work. Still, I don't know your goals, maybe you want the engine restored to new.

Agree, I don't think this is possible. If it is, it will be far more work anyway.

Good to know, as I will one day be pulling the powertrain myself for a freshen/upgrade. What specifically does leaving the head off help you with? Won't the assembly come straight down? And where does the bottom of the engine get supported as you drop it out? Leave the cross-member and front mount and member installed? I have access to a hydraulic lifting table for 911, Cayenne, and Panamera power train removal, so I may try it that way if it can be balanced well on the table.

I dont remove subframe. removing head first makes it much easier to access everything else.

Good information. Glad to see someone has done it.

Currently taking the exhaust manifold/turbo assembly off but stuck trying to remove a rusty downpipe which blocks access to the turbo oil drain line and other bolts. It appears as if this car has never been taken apart in its 145,000 mile life and has seen its fair share of Michigan winters hence a lot of PB blast and swearing.

I will keep you guys updated and may even make a build thread with an engine rebuild. Wish I would have gotten a go-pro over the holidays ha.
