Weird howling, I think my turbo is toast

Hi. Not too long after I bought my IX I noticed what I thought was overboosting. Sometimes at WOT in 5th or 6th the car would do a single little jolt as if it misfired or something when and then carry on as normal. According to the torque app it's peaking at 28psi on standard rods. It got worse in the winter which went with that diagnosis as far as I know. I spoke to a tuner and he agreed it sounded realistic. the tuner I wanted to use was fully booked for quite some time but seeing as I'd barely be using the car during the winter I left the issue there for the time being and just didn't thrash the car too hard because it's still on standard rods and I didn't want to risk snapping one. Well move forward a couple of months and a new DP and LICP fitted and recently I started getting a quiet howling when at very specific revs once warm. It only seems to happen under vac when it's at idle or partial throttle when at cruising speeds which I'd presume is also under vac, but it doesn't always happen and just appears for a few seconds and then goes again. Is it possible I've actually just had a boost leak the whole time which has caused the overboosting/jolt and it's cooked my turbo? It worth checking for boost leaks and fixing any and then that might fix the issue or is it too late for the turbo?

Any thoughts and opinions appreciated

Evo IX, basic bolt-ons, remapped to 386bhp

And sorry for the essay!

Should always check for boost leaks after the pressurized side of the intake tract is taken apart. I would start with a boost leak test.

A blown turbo will sound like a kazoo.

When mine died it sounded like a weird, hollow whistle. It got louder with more RPM. Broken shaft. Worst sound ever, next to broken ring lands. LOL

Well it doesn't sound like a kazoo or a whistle, just a quite low single tone "hooooo" kind of noise. Quite quiet. It only starts after a fair drive, I kill the engine for whatever reason and then when I start back up it will do it at idle. If the revs even slightly move it stops. I'll try and get a boost leak test done tomorrow.

Thanks for the help

I read that the noise im hearing might be the turbine rubbing on the housing. I'll check for excessive play tomorrow too

Sounds like you are describing my old MAP turbo. Maybe the wheel stopping. The sound you hear would be vacuum pulling through the wheel.
Mine did the same thing the second time it died. Severe shaft play.

Yeah I'm not gonna get my hopes up. It still drives ok for now but I do see a new turbo in my future.

Well I'm UK but have ordered plenty of parts from your shores before, what's the price if it comes to that?

Ooh. I'm on my laptop, now, and see where you are from. Shipping would be pretty ugly.

If the turbo is smoked, you should be able to find another used 9 turbo for a reasonable amount. somewhere in the UK. They typically go for 300-400 USD here in the states and aren't too hard to find.

I'd be all over a $300-400 IX turbo.

All getting my hopes up LOL

I see turbine housings, with no cracks, going for $350.
If only I knew what machining needed to be done AND could buy green/red/black CHRAs. I'd run them all day. Cracks don't bother me any.

I think they're around the same price here but in GBP, so if it comes to it I may look at importing one from your side of the pond. Anyway time to go and find out the turbo's fate. I'm finishing off my DIY boost leak tester today so hopefully I can fix any leaks too. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks for all the help
