Pull motor without head
Pull motor without head
Hi guys,
I'm about ready to pull this motor out of my Evo 9, but had a few questions. Note that I will be dropping the engine out the bottom (since I have a four post lift):
1) I already removed the head, but want to use my engine crane to lower the engine down. Since the crane brackets are on the head, do I have to refit the head before doing it? I'd rather not (since the head has been freshly machined, and will be attached to the new block anyway before I remove this old engine). Is there an alternate mount point? Do I have to fabricate some kind of mounting plate that I would bolt down to the head bolt locations? Any other ideas?
2) I assume since I'm dropping this out the bottom, I just have to disconnect the half shafts, driveshaft, remove the braces and cradle, and just lower the engine, transmission AND TC down together? I would rather not have to unbolt the TC from the transmission if I can avoid it!
Actually, those are my major two questions.. Let me know if there are any other tips. I've read through a ton of "engine removal" threads so I think I'm clear on the Evo engine removal process (except the above!)
Thanks in advance for any help!

unbolt the subframe and drop the engine down with gearbox, TC and subframe attached.. you do not need the crane.. just drop everything down to the floor or some trolley..
first unbolt the steering from the rack and release the clutch bearing....

To add to Rom's suggestion. If you don't have those angled brackets you can just put the bolt through one of the links in the chain if it fits and use a large fender washer if the link is large. You use the old head bolts if they're available if that isn't obvious. Also, you can do it with just two bolts, just put them diagonally whichever way balances best.
Thanks guys! The transmission was swapped out 6 months ago and the carrier was removed - so bolt removal should be fine!
I think I should be good to go now - I was pretty sure that's how I would do it, but just wasn't sure there was something I was missing specific to Evo's!
Thanks!
